When you were small, you must have had many chances to watch him work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I often helped out from elementary school. \r\nWell, \u201chelped\u201d might not be the right word\u2014it was more like I was made to help (laughs). Mostly chores. <br>\r\nCeramics involves a lot of small tasks in between the actual work. It didn\u2019t feel like \u201ccreating things!\u201d so I didn\u2019t find it fun at all. Back then, Saturdays were half-days, right? <br>\r\nJust as I was about to go out and play, they\u2019d say \u201chelp out\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Were your older brothers involved too?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> We were in it together\u2014fatefully (laughs). All four of us brothers disliked it. <br>\r\nThe eldest seemed willing to inherit the family business when he was young, so maybe it wasn\u2019t as bad for him.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Now, you\u2019re the only one in the family working in ceramics, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> The eldest tried it at first, but when I was in my second or third year of high school, he said he wanted to do something else\u2026 I thought, if no one is going to do it, maybe I\u2019ll give it a try. That\u2019s how it started.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So the reason is that no one else would do it (laughs). <br>\r\nEven so, I imagine you also considered that if no one took over your father\u2019s work, it would be a problem.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> At first, I wanted to go to culinary school, but things turned out differently\u2026 <br>\r\nI ended up going to the Seto training school. <br>\r\nI could leave home if I went to Seto, so I lightly decided to give it a try. <br>\r\nOnce school started, as the son of a potter, I had hardly touched clay, so I couldn\u2019t knead it, couldn\u2019t use the wheel, basically couldn\u2019t do anything (laughs). <br>\r\nWell, I could do packing, maybe (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3>Has It Really Ended?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After school, you went to work with Izuru Yamamoto in Bizen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I wanted to become an apprentice. <br>\r\nThen someone suggested Bizen, and I thought, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s go with that.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:(laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I also wanted to learn about unglazed firing different from my father\u2019s style, and wood-fired kilns. <br>\r\nI stayed three years, and the teacher was friendly and explained things while working. <br>\r\nHe would say, \u201cWhen making this shape, imagine it like this,\u201d and show me as he worked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Of course, there were strict moments as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> One time, the teacher asked me to prepare clay for a vase. I prepared it too soft. For vases, it shouldn\u2019t be that soft. <br>\r\nHe scolded me, saying, \u201cJust because you think you\u2019re done, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s really done.\u201d <br>\r\nI often do things without thinking, but that phrase stayed with me. <br>\r\nTo create something properly, you must follow the necessary steps; otherwise, it won\u2019t turn out well. I learned this lesson, which seems obvious now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I feel like there are many things I think are done but aren\u2019t really finished\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Even now, at work, I feel like I\u2019m asked, \u201cIs this really finished?\u201d <br>\r\nWhether it\u2019s done or not is often just about whether I want it to be done.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \u201cAre you really satisfied with this? Did you do it properly?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Looking back, I think that\u2019s what the teacher meant. That\u2019s why, even though he was usually calm, he was so strict. <br>\r\nIt might not have been just about the clay problem.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you remember something that made you happy?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> When I was leaving, he said, \u201cYou worked hard without ever taking a day off.\u201d <br>\r\nThat was the only thing I was praised for (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Three years, no tardiness or absences!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Well, yes. I remember feeling happy that he had noticed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/interview_20170426-1_02.jpg\"width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<h3>What Flows Naturally Within Me<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After Bizen, you initially worked with your father. <br>\r\nCompared to your childhood, your father\u2019s work must have looked different, and you probably learned a lot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I think I learn a lot unconsciously. What I inherited from my father is definitely incorporated into the flow of my own work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: One year later, you were truly on your own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> It was tough. I was just over 20 at the time. I couldn\u2019t even wake up on time or start work on time properly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After a while, you came to Hanada.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I was 23. At first, I was told, \u201cCome back after a year,\u201d and at my next visit, I got an order. The first order was a katakuchi pouring vessel and a shinogi-ichimatsu teacup. <br>\r\nI never imagined my current situation back then (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You just went with the natural flow to get here, it seems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think much. It\u2019s not as glamorous as saying \u201cI was guided,\u201d but I think, \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t work, I can go back.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: In a good way, you always seem to have an easygoing attitude, not fixated on narrow ideas.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> For example, when asked \u201cWhich piece in this exhibition do you like the most?\u201d I struggle to answer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you answer?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> \u201cNone.\u201d It may be a disappointing answer, but I don\u2019t work in a way that focuses on one favorite item. <br>\r\nNowadays I use my name, Haruya Abe, but before that, my family\u2019s kiln would, for example, mass-produce Minpei Kashu&#8217;s tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/interview_20170426-1_03.jpg\"width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: People like you support the foundation of the Japanese ceramics world. Your pieces are functional, not overly assertive, and respect the purpose of tableware. <br>\r\nOf course, at reasonable prices. You make a moderate amount\u2014neither too few nor too many. It\u2019s reassuring to have your perspective.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Of course, each piece is made with care, but I don\u2019t aim to sell it based on the intensity of my feelings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Indeed, you aren\u2019t consciously putting your feelings into it. But it seems that, naturally, you\u2019re completely present in the work. <br>\r\nBeing born in a potter\u2019s family and facing the maker of the tableware you use, everything blends naturally. You don\u2019t feel like you\u2019re making something special.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I don\u2019t treat ceramics as work. I just enjoy making them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That suits you well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Being praised or seeing people enjoy my work motivates me. Even if I\u2019m not praised directly, people are using my pieces. That allows me to continue making more.Being able to keep creating is a happiness. <br>\r\nSometimes I talk with my family, \u201cWhy do we make so much? Is it really okay?\u201d (laughs) But somewhere, someone is using them. Even if I rarely see it, it makes me happy and sometimes nervous (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/interview_20170426-1_04.jpg\"width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<h3>C\u2019mon, me, get it together!<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Are there tasks you want to do or don\u2019t feel like doing?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Honestly, yes. But often it\u2019s just a self-imposed limitation. <br>\r\nLike with this oval plate\u2014I thought I wasn\u2019t good at slab work. But this time, I found it surprisingly enjoyable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \u201cHey, I have talent for slab work too!\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> No, not like that (laughs). I just thought I didn\u2019t like it, and that\u2019s why. Once I committed to it, it became really fun.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You do it out of necessity. When someone like me brings reference materials. This is typical of how you go with the flow. <br>\r\nAnd your amazing quality is that you never say \u201cNO\u201d to any request. You always accept. I must have asked some rather selfish things before.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Yes (laughs). But including those experiences, I can grow.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I must grow too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> \u201cC\u2019mon, me, get it together!\u201d (laughs) \r\nMost potters work alone. You could slack off if you wanted. You could pick only the work you like, but stepping forward is important, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It certainly is.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>A Little Consideration<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: When working, what do you consider important?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I don\u2019t have a grand policy, but I always think about how people will use the pieces. <br>\r\nFor example, I make sure patterns don\u2019t interfere with food presentation. Choosing in a shop is just the start for the tableware. I want to make it with that in mind. <br>\r\nEven when I make new works, I have almost no truly original pieces.I just want to offer traditional and existing designs subtly for modern living.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/interview_20170426-1_01.jpg\"width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Looking Forward to May<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Are there any memorable new works for this exhibition?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> Slab work. And I was able to finish the handle of that mug beautifully and cutely.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019ve also started light blue glaze.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> I like this soft, deep feeling. It makes the engraved and relief designs stand out clearly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The atmosphere is similar to the old Imari six-inch blue plate you saw before. <br>\r\nCompared to thickly glazed dark pieces, you can see beyond the glaze, like looking at a lake.\r\nTechnically, it also makes the decoration stand out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Haruya Abe:<\/strong> This light blue glaze feels soft and nice. <br>\r\nRecently, I\u2019ve been keeping my work from becoming too refined. I try to leave a little imperfection. For daily use, this is just right, thought.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It brings out your strengths.I look forward to the exhibition.
