My mother practiced calligraphy, so from the time I was in kindergarten I was made to hold a brush quite rigorously. Our house was always filled with the scent of ink.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  I\u2019ve heard your mother placed great importance on food.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  She prepared almost everything herself.\r\nAs for tableware, it was all porcelain\u2014I ended up disliking porcelain because of that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So there wasn\u2019t any earthenware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  After my mother started going to the pottery fair in Mashiko and places like that, little by little\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Did she take you to Mashiko as well?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I went with her, but in junior high and high school I had no interest in ceramics, so\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_01.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n<h3>Sawing J\u014dmon Pottery<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  What did you do after graduating from high school?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I studied agriculture at a university in Miyazaki.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  I imagine agriculture covers a wide range of fields.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  At first I was studying environmental science, but by chance I visited a laboratory researching agricultural ruins, and a senior student was sawing a piece of J\u014dmon pottery in half to examine its components.<br>\r\nIt looked incredibly compelling\u2026 So I asked, \u201cIs it really okay to cut pottery?\u201d and he said, \u201cYes, it\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Did you start cutting pottery as well?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  The investigation ended just before my year, so instead I worked on an excavation related to highway construction near the Kagoshima prefectural border. We collected soil from strata dating back about ten thousand years and analyzed it using a centrifuge.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That must have been interesting in its own way.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  It was. You don\u2019t expect to find pink soil beneath the ground, do you? And when you analyze it, you can tell things like whether pampas grass once grew there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Pink soil?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Looking back, I think it was probably similar to the moxa clay found in Gifu.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That\u2019s quite a step closer to ceramics. \r\nYou must have had many discoveries and surprises.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  On a grand scale\u2026 I mean, it would have been exciting if we\u2019d unearthed human bones. But our biggest discovery was, \u201cLook! These are traces of roasted chestnuts!\u201d Rather understated (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You found traces of roasted chestnuts?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  From the J\u014dmon period.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So people were roasting and eating chestnuts in the J\u014dmon period.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  That was our greatest discovery. No gold or silver treasures whatsoever (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That would be asking too much (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_02.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<h3>After Seeing a Jar\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  What prompted you to want to make ceramics yourself?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I shouldn\u2019t go into too much detail out of respect for the owner, but when I saw a certain jar someone owned, I thought, \u201cI want to make something better.\u201d<br>\r\nRather cheeky, considering I\u2019d never made anything myself (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So it was a jar that made you feel that way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  It was a jar with not a single redeeming quality.<br>\r\nIt felt flimsy, and it only reinforced my feeling: \u201cThis is why I dislike porcelain.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Porcelain was clearly the villain in your mind (laughs). Did you begin studying ceramics after that?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  No, not yet (laughs). I didn\u2019t know anyone involved in ceramics, and my mother was strongly opposed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  She was firmly against it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Becoming a potter out of nowhere\u2026 She hadn\u2019t even fully accepted my studying agriculture at a university in Miyazaki.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  I see.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  She seemed to believe that \u201ca woman should simply enroll in a literature department or something like that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  What about your father?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  He opposed it too, but more in a \u201cWell, that\u2019s just like you, so I suppose it can\u2019t be helped\u201d kind of way (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Encounter with a Joseon White Porcelain Jar<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You also love music. What were you into?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  It connects to my first job after graduation, but I was completely immersed in punk. Rancid, The Clash, the Sex Pistols\u2026<br>\r\nAround the time I graduated, I thought, \u201cNext, I\u2019ll devote myself to music,\u201d and just then a record shop in Jinb\u014dch\u014d was hiring trainee staff, so I joined.<br>\r\nBut the shop specialized in enka, idol music, and classical\u2026 \r\nThere was a rock section, but it had its own specialist, so I couldn\u2019t go near it.<br>\r\nAs I kept polishing records by artists like Saori Yuki, Morishige Hisaya, and Hibari Misora, I started to grow disillusioned\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_03.jpg\" width=\"97%\"><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Things didn\u2019t go as planned.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  At that time, during a lunch break, I happened to walk into a caf\u00e9 called Rihaku (now closed).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Quite an encounter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  There, I was struck hard by a Joseon white porcelain jar\u2026<br>\r\nAnd Rihaku was hiring as well. Before I knew it, I was saying, \u201cPlease hire me, for now.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So for you, a poor jar opened the path to ceramics, and a great jar pushed you down that path (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Then it turned out that the president of the record shop where I had worked was a regular at Rihaku\u2026 I\u2019d left saying something dramatic like \u201cI\u2019m pursuing my dream,\u201d and there he was, right in front of me\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Extremely awkward.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Very awkward (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>A Year with the Master<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Did you speak with the master often?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  He taught me about Joseon ceramics from the very beginning. \r\nThere were also many books there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Wasn\u2019t Rihaku busy?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Depending on the weather, there were times when no customers came at all. The master, Shigeyuki Miyahara, was a very single-minded person. If someone came just to chat without any interest in Joseon ceramics, he would send them away.<br>\r\nHe deeply valued customers who came quietly to look at Joseon ware, so I think he took the atmosphere of the shop very seriously.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Listening to explanations while surrounded by Joseon ceramics\u2026 it sounds ideal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  He would say, \u201cWhen people think of Joseon ware, they tend to favor pieces that are warped or distorted, but that\u2019s not what they truly are. They are much more beautiful.\u201d<br>\r\nHe also said, \u201cPeople praise a crooked sake flask as \u2018wonderful,\u2019 but that\u2019s not the point.\u201d \r\nAll the books here were given to me by Rihaku.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_04.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  I see\u2014that explains the books in Hangul. \r\nI had wondered where you found them. You must have been able to see more than just white porcelain jars.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  There was woodwork, metalwork\u2026 a full range. There were paintings as well.<br>\r\nAnd museum professionals and antique dealers came in as customers, so I often overheard their conversations with the master\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That must have been valuable. You listened from the side?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  When they mentioned, for example, a fine piece held in a certain collection, I would stop by a secondhand bookstore nearby on my way home and look for exhibition catalogues to see what it was like\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  A time of intense absorption, then. Could you name some favorite Joseon pieces?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  The white porcelain jar and the meiping I saw at Rihaku, and a Mishima tea bowl at the Mingeikan that is worn and slightly misshapen from being over-pressed, yet still possesses dignity\u2014those three.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  After encountering Joseon ware at Rihaku, your desire to pursue ceramics only deepened.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I felt I had finally understood what that earlier jar had been lacking.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  How long were you at Rihaku?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  One year. One day the master told me, \u201cYou can\u2019t stay here forever. If you\u2019re going to pursue ceramics, you must properly step into that world.\u201d<br>\r\nAfter that, I attended a school in Kyoto for two years, then worked part-time in factories and offices in Kyoto and Hachioji while making pottery. Eventually I moved to Oita, where I am now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Teachers in Ceramics<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Did you learn techniques at school?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  The basics at school, and the technical aspects of Joseon ware from books by Akira Yoshida, as well as exhibition catalogues and publications on mingei.<br>\r\nBooks are treasures to me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Could you show us those books now?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I\u2019m sorry\u2014I don\u2019t have them with me right now. They\u2019ve wandered off somewhere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That doesn\u2019t sound very careful (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  They\u2019re carefully put away somewhere. I just no longer know where that somewhere is!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  In any case, you read them again and again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Until they fell apart\u2026<br>\r\nAt that time, no one would teach you how to mix glazes, and such information wasn\u2019t made public.<br>\r\nBut Akira Yoshida openly published it all\u2014he even showed exactly what Mishima stamps looked like. They were invaluable to me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  There are many fascinating titles here. \u201cMishima and Hakeme\u201d by Yamada Mankichiro also stands out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  From these books, I learned \u201caffection\u201d for objects.\r\nReading books filled with genuine love is enjoyable.<br>\r\nThis one, too, dates from the wartime period, and it carefully records items unearthed from old kiln sites with hand-drawn illustrations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_05.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  This is \u201cKorean Ceramics,\u201d highly praised by the master at Rihaau.\u3000The first edition was published near the end of the war; this is a later reprint\u2026 it\u2019s excellent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  \u201cKorean Ceramics\u201d by Takushin Kushi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  A pure spirit\u2026 perhaps. This, too, was published during the war.<br>\r\nWhen you read books from that time, you notice that the prefaces often say things like \u201cJapan is great\u201d or \u201cKorea is lazy.\u201d\u3000But this author is different.<br>\r\nAt first it\u2019s not so apparent, but toward the end he praises Korean art wholeheartedly. He writes about how extraordinary Korean art was, how it was transmitted to Japan and influenced it\u2026<br>\r\nI think it required resolve to write that during wartime. He evaluates Korean works after fully acknowledging the value of various artistic traditions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/20170621-1_06.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That\u2019s very different from writing today. He expressed his affection for Joseon ware under wartime conditions. That must have given you strength.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Sometimes I didn\u2019t immediately grasp what the master at Rihaku meant, but when I read this book, it suddenly became clear.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Gratitude<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Is there anything you\u2019ve made that remains particularly memorable?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  When I first saw something I had made, I thought, \u201cWhat am I going to do? I\u2019ve made something amazing. It\u2019s going to sell too well\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That\u2019s impressive. What was it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  A small Mishima plate. But it didn\u2019t sell at all. It was at a handmade market in Kyoto. Seeing a nearby glass artist with excellent work also struggling to sell made me oddly relieved\u2026 It made me realize that what I consider the best isn\u2019t necessarily what others think is best.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Do you still have that plate?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  This one. It\u2019s been fifteen years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  It was this beautiful even fifteen years ago.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  It didn\u2019t sell.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Why didn\u2019t it sell, I wonder. Does it bring back memories?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Mostly bitter ones (laughs). Now I\u2019m simply grateful to have work. And children don\u2019t choose based on theory or knowledge.<br>\r\nThey don\u2019t make extravagant purchases\u2014they have to persuade their mother to spend the money if they truly want it. They overcome that hurdle to take it home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  I hope they remember it when they grow up. And perhaps one day return to your solo exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  By then I\u2019ll be an old woman (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Throwing on the Wheel to Rock \u2019n\u2019 Roll<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  What do you want to make now?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I aim toward the Joseon pieces I love, while continuing to make works that belong on the dining table. For now, I try not to make anything strange. And I don\u2019t forget to make what I myself would want.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So you create what you need yourself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  Yes. I wouldn\u2019t want to make things I don\u2019t need and end up with a house full of unsold stock.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  (laughs)\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  In one way or another, I do believe in the power of tableware\u2026 Even if a couple is arguing, if you\u2019re using your favorite pieces, you\u2019re unlikely to throw them. \r\nThey enrich everyday life and perhaps even act as a kind of restraint.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That\u2019s unusually serious (laughs). \r\nI also like your blue-and-white work. The clay body is strong, and so is the brushwork.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-1_09.jpg\" width=\"97%\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  The motifs are based on old examples\u2014Imari, Joseon, Shonzui\u2026 \r\nI\u2019m drawn to designs that have been shared across Asia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Shonzui as well?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  I borrow small elements from Shonzui.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Just portions, then. Your blue-and-white work carries your own atmosphere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  When you look at antiques, even with the same motif, the feeling changes depending on the artisan who painted it. That irregularity is part of the appeal, I think.<br>\r\nI\u2019ve simply joined at the end of that lineage, continuing to paint traditional designs\u2014 while living in the present.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  That makes sense.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chietsu Mizugaki:<\/strong>  When someone at Seto\u2019s Shindo Studio said, \u201cIf Edo-period artisans were alive today, they\u2019d all be using electric wheels,\u201d it eased my mind a little.<br>\r\nI sometimes worried about the gap between aiming for the past and living a different life now. But I grew up watching Kinnikuman(a famouse anime), after all.
