The core of a surfboard is polyurethane, which we carve into shape. Even if it\u2019s the same design, the result differs depending on the craftsman.<br>\r\nThe nuances of the lines and edges vary from person to person\u2014that fascinated me. It\u2019s similar to what I do now in ceramics.<br>\r\nI\u2019m drawn to clean lines and sharp edges\u2014that kind of precision really appeals to me.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Did the factory let you make boards from the beginning?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I just wanted to make things, so I said, \u201cPlease let me learn,\u201d and started working for free.<br>\r\nAt first, I was just doing repair work as instructed.<br>\r\nI still remember the shock when, after getting used to it and thinking \u201cAlright, I nailed it!\u201d I proudly showed my work to a senior craftsman, and he tore it apart\u2014\u201cWhat is this? It\u2019s all bumpy!\u201d<br>\r\nAt the time, it looked perfectly flat to me.<br>\r\nLater, I realized my hands and eyes simply weren\u2019t trained yet.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Sounds like your university life revolved around surfing&#8230;<\/p> \r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t study at all (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: A typical college life story (laughs). I can\u2019t really judge\u2014I was the same.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>What You Discover, Learn, and Begin by Going<\/h3>  \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> After graduation, when I was unsure of what to do, I came across a book in the library that mentioned pottery on Tanegashima Island (Note 1).<br>\r\nFrom that moment, my mind was completely set on Tanegashima (laughs).<br>\r\nI thought, \u201cI can surf and work at the same time!\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\nI also read an interview with master potter Takashi Nakazato\u2014it was fascinating.<br>\r\nHe started from scratch and built that unique Tanegashima pottery style himself.<br>\r\nI was inspired by that. Unlike established traditions such as Karatsu, Shigaraki, or Bizen, Tanegashima was something newly born\u2014that idea appealed to me.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you decided to head to Tanegashima.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I couldn\u2019t resist the urge to go. I found the address in the Yellow Pages(a local business and services directory) at the library and went without even contacting anyone.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And then you realized&#8230;<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Yes&#8230; (laughs).<br>\r\nMaster Nakazato had already left the island.<br>\r\nAnd of course, a complete beginner with no experience or connections wasn\u2019t going to be taken seriously&#8230;<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: But you were already there in Tanegashima.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Exactly. Since I had come all that way, I had to do something. I just kept saying, \u201cPlease let me learn.\u201d<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: There it is again (laughs). Just like at the surfboard factory.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I kept insisting until someone asked, \u201cCan you use a chainsaw?\u201d<br>\r\nI had barely ever used one, but I immediately replied, \u201cYes, I can!\u201d (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s so you, Mr. Noguchi (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> And that\u2019s how my life on Tanegashima began.<br>\r\nAt first, I wasn\u2019t even allowed to touch the clay. But before long, I was permitted to practice kneading clay in the mornings and evenings.<br>\r\nEventually, I began teaching myself to use the potter\u2019s wheel.<br>\r\nBut my method was so unstructured that after about a year, I felt the need to study properly.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And then?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I wrote a letter to Master Nakazato in Karatsu and went to visit him. That was our first meeting.<br>\r\nHe told me he no longer took apprentices, but he handed me a small plate\u2014something every new apprentice would make at Ryuta Kiln (Nakazato&#8217;s workshop) \u2014and said, \u201cPractice with this.\u201d<br>\r\nI went back home and practiced throwing that small plate on the wheel.<br>\r\nLater, I was occasionally invited by Taki Nakazato (Nakazato&#8217;s son) to help fire kilns or join meals. It was a modest but meaningful connection that continued for years.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Visiting Karatsu led to a lasting connection.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Yes. Years later, Master Nakazato contacted me, asking if he could fire work on Tanegashima for his 70th birthday exhibition.<br>\r\nMy reference points had always been that little plate and the pieces he made long ago on Tanegashima.<br>\r\nWhen he saw what I was making, I think he recognized that \u201cthere\u2019s a young potter working in this spirit.\u201d<br>\r\nFrom there, we began talking about holding a two-person exhibition, and later, I accompanied him as his assistant during his projects in the U.S. and at Hananoki Kiln (A workshop established by Fujio Koyama, a leading scholar of Chinese ceramics).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You built that relationship gradually. And eventually, your \u201cswitchback kiln\u201d was born.<\/p> \r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Yes, while I was still learning by doing, I was firing in an anagama kiln about once every two months\u2014even though I had no plans to sell anything (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Once every two months? That\u2019s impressive for self-taught work.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>If Only the Kiln Could Float and Flip in the Air&#8230;<\/h3>  \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Often, the front of the kiln fired well, but the chimney side didn\u2019t. So I used to think, \u201cIf only the kiln could just float and flip midair!\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\nLike something out of Doraemon.<br>\r\nAt that time it was just a fantasy, but when I first saw a horizontal wood-fired kiln in the U.S., I realized my idea might actually be possible.<br>\r\nI sketched the concept and showed it to Master Nakazato, asking, \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d and he said, \u201cBuild it right away.\u201d<br>\r\nSo I said, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll start right away.\u201d<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Did it take long to make it work?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> The first firing didn\u2019t reach full temperature, so the pieces weren\u2019t as I had hoped, but the switchback kiln itself worked.<br>\r\nOnce the principle was proven, it was just a matter of precision.<br>\r\nI changed the chimney on the second firing and kept refining it until it began to work smoothly.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Learning and Being Inspired Around the World<\/h3>  \r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-2_01.jpg\" width=\"97%\">   \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You often travel overseas. Have you made any new discoveries, like with the horizontal wood-fired kiln?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Yes, I built a switchback kiln at Northern Arizona University, and that experience taught me a lot.<br>\r\nEveryone there has such open-minded approaches\u2014free from conventions.<br>\r\nI used to believe an anagama kiln had to be built on a slope, but they showed me otherwise.<br>\r\nTheir kiln structures and tools are all so rational.<br>\r\nMy own working methods have been greatly influenced by that experience.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>In Love with the Clay of Tanegashima<\/h3>  \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you value most in your work?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> This is the work I chose because I wanted to do it. So, basically, I just want to make what I truly want to make.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of things do you want to make?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> It changes depending on the time, but I want to stay honest to myself in each moment.<br>\r\nThere was a time when I was completely absorbed in Master Nakazato\u2019s style, trying hard to imitate his early works, but now I also want to create something different.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of difference?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I love the clay of Tanegashima, so I want to develop a style that truly brings out its character.<br>\r\nNot by forcing something strange, but by letting the clay speak for itself.<br>\r\nTanegashima clay is fine-grained and allows surprisingly thin forms, so I aim to express both the strength of wood-fired ceramics and a sense of delicacy and sharpness.<br>\r\nThough, who knows\u2014I might be saying something else next time (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That coexistence of earthy power and refined form\u2014that\u2019s what I love about your work.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>What I Keep, What I Continue to Gain<\/h3>  \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> The flow of lines and the sharpness of edges\u2014I\u2019ve carried that impression from my surfboard days.<br>\r\nI also love ancient Sue pottery.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Some of your pieces already show that influence.<\/p> \r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I also like the textures and lines of the Yayoi period. Recently, I\u2019ve been getting interested in old glass as well.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is there anything you\u2019d like to pursue going forward?<\/p> \r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Right now, I\u2019m completely absorbed in my work.<br>\r\nI don\u2019t worry too much about what\u2019s around me\u2014I just want to stay honest and focused on making.<\/p>  \r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170621-2_02.jpg\" width=\"97%\">  \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Any message for visitors to your upcoming exhibition?<\/p> \r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> Almost everything was made using Tanegashima clay.<br>\r\nLately, I\u2019ve been deeply into green wood-fired stoneware.<br>\r\nI hope people will come and see it in person.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Ms. Mizugaki said, \u201cPlease tell Mr. Noguchi I admire his pottery and look forward to meeting him.\u201d<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Etsuji Noguchi:<\/strong> I\u2019ve only seen Ms. Mizugaki\u2019s work in photos, but since most of my pieces are unglazed wood-fired pottery, I think our works will complement each other nicely.<br>\r\nPlease give her my regards.<\/p> \r\n<br>\r\n\u226a END \u226b\r\n<br> \r\n<p style=\"color: #707070; margin-bottom:20px; margin-top:0px; padding:0px; font-size:13px;\">(Note 1) The pottery on Tanegashima, known as Tanegashima-yaki, began when local volunteers sought to revive the island\u2019s traditional YOKINO ware. They consulted ceramic scholar Fujio Koyama, who recommended master potter Takashi Nakazato to come to the island. The name \u201cTanegashima-yaki\u201d was given by Koyama himself.<br>\r\nIt is characterized by unglazed, wood-fired ceramics that make full use of the iron-rich clay\u2014primitive, expressive forms
