(laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So neither of you is playing the straight man, then. (laughs). Let\u2019s start with Mr. Shimura&#8217;s black.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Recently, I\u2019ve been making this kind of black ware. The patterns are applied by brushing white slip onto the surface. \r\nFrom the late early to early middle Joseon period, decorations like this begin to appear.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_01.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What prompted you to try this approach?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> When I was working at Mr.Sokichi Nagae\u2019s place, I spent a lot of time looking at tenmoku, so I was drawn to black from the beginning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It\u2019s different from the black that Mr. Nagae&#8217;s  works with, but that experience helped you discover the appeal of black.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> At the same time, I felt that the rigid, tense feel of Northern Song wares wasn\u2019t right for my own work. \r\nLater, when I saw Joseon-period pieces in the Ataka Collection and at the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, I thought, \u201cThis is really good.\u201d<br>\r\nOriginally, many of those works were large\u2014maebyong vases and the like\u2014but I wanted to create tableware that could be used in contemporary life. \r\nIt took time, but I\u2019ve finally reached a point where this black comes out in a satisfying way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Was achieving this \u201cusable black\u201d difficult?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> I wanted to produce this black using only natural iron. \r\nThrough a lot of trial and error with different firing combinations, I eventually arrived at this black.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019ve always valued materials highly. \r\nWhat is the significance of aiming for a black achieved solely through natural iron?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Using processed materials makes it easy to do many things, but when I look at the finished piece, something feels off.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Red Flesh and White Flesh<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Have you tried using them yourself in various ways?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Of course!The red flesh really pops.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: If you say that, the white flesh would stand out beautifully too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> I did try making soba cups, but with tea you can\u2019t enjoy the color\u2026 It feels like you\u2019re drinking something pitch-black, and I thought, \u201cThis doesn\u2019t work.\u201d You can\u2019t really see the soba broth either\u2026 It turns into a blind tasting situation (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How do you choose the motifs for the patterns?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> This chrysanthemum comes from around early Imari ware. This one is a typical ruyi-cloud motif from Joseon ware. \r\nI choose motifs based on how visually appealing they are and how well they suit the form.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_02.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: MS. Miyaoka, what do you think of Mr.Shimura&#8217;s new \u201cblack\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Huh?!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Sorry for putting you on the spot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I let my guard down. \r\nI was just vaguely listening and thinking, \u201cOh, I see\u2026\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: When you first saw them, what impression did you have? Something like, \u201cHey, these are good,\u201d perhaps?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> \u2026Yes. That\u2019s about it\u2014\u201cThese are good.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> She doesn\u2019t really look at them much. Probably not that interested.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> That\u2019s not true\u2014I do look at them!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> At the exhibition, she\u2019ll say, \u201cOh, so you\u2019re making things like this now.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Right, sometimes you discover things at the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019re completely viewing it from a customer\u2019s perspective (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I\u2019m usually too busy focusing intensely on my own work. I think Shimura is the same.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> That might be true.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> And asking, \u201cWhat are you working on?\u201d every time, you know\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s just your style as a pair.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_03.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Rhythm Within a Tableware<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: This square plate is wonderful too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> For dried sardines, for example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_04.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The slightly shifted hakeme division really catches the eye. It has a great balance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Some Mishima sections are neatly aligned, while others leap around more freely. What I pay attention to is that each part stands on its own. \r\nPut another way, you could call it a sense of \u201crhythm.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Rhythm.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Yes. Whether they\u2019re orderly or irregular, I hope each piece conveys its own rhythm.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>That Delicious Hitsumabushi<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Now, let\u2019s move on to this piece.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_05.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> This is inlay work. I scratch the surface and fill it with black clay. It\u2019s based on pieces that appeared around the mid-early Joseon period. Up until now, I\u2019ve mainly done white inlay, but I\u2019d like to increase black inlay as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What is the motif of this pattern?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> It\u2019s probably a simplified peony.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Ms. Miyaoka, is this the first time you\u2019re seeing this piece?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I\u2019ve seen this one before (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is this a bowl? It could almost be mistaken for a rather large rice bowl.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> For people who like to eat a big serving (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Maybe a small donburi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> It works for simmered dishes, or bibimbap.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Mini bibimbap.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Noodles in broth, braised pork belly\u2026 it might even work for dessert.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Ah, braised pork belly sounds great. The blocky shape would suit it well. Speaking of blocks, cubed tuna topped with grated yam would look beautiful too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Ochazuke would be good as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> And Hitsumabushi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> I don\u2019t usually make hitsumabushi at home, though.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> But when you bought eel at Tsukiji market and made it once, it was really delicious.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Oh yes, that did happen.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: From filleting onward?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Impressive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> My family ran a tempura restaurant, and when I lived at home I filleted about a hundred conger eels a day, so you kind of pick it up naturally.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is the body structure similar between eel and conger eel?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> The cross-section of the bones is slightly different, but the basic structure is pretty much the same, I think. Oh, and lately I\u2019ve also been working on white porcelain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Joseon white porcelain would be different from Ms. Miyaoka\u2019s white porcelain, so that adds more variation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_06.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Going to the Trouble of Making It a Gourd\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Next, let\u2019s move on to Ms.Miyaoka\u2019s new works.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Oh no, it\u2019s my turn\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs) This gourd-shaped piece looks like it\u2019s going to be very popular.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> It\u2019s a take on Ko-Imari. On top of the gourd, there\u2019s probably a gourd leaf layered over it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Layering motifs like this is something you often see. What do you find interesting about it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Don\u2019t you find it interesting that after going to the trouble of making it a gourd shape, you then hide it with a leaf? \r\nYou create a distorted form, and then boldly place a big leaf right in the center\u2026 \r\nAnd on top of that, filling the remaining space with shippo patterns is quite something. \r\nThe composition is really fascinating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_07.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: There\u2019s also charming decoration on the back\u2026 so many highlights.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Restaurants would probably like this too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Would shirako work?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Grilled shirako after marinating might be nice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Ah, cod milt.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Were you imagining fugu shirako just now? (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Yeah, a little. But cod would be good too.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Well, either works. I was thinking of cod.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Ms.Miyaoka, you\u2019ve made several other irregular shapeed plates as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Fish-shaped ones, ones with two overlapping windmill palms\u2026<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Those palm motifs were wonderful. There were chrysanthemum versions too. What do you find appealing about these irregular shapes?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> What I like are pieces that feel modern.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Modernity. Is it something like playfulness?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Partial underglaze blue decoration, for example\u2026 pieces where you can really feel the \u201cdesign.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Mr. Shimura, any comments?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Huh\u2026 this one?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Let your guard down again? (laughs) When it\u2019s the other person\u2019s work, you both listen in a very relaxed way.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>\u201cDon\u2019t Take It\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you influence or inspire each other through your work?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Me too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Sometimes it feels like my molds are about to be taken (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> She tells me, \u201cDon\u2019t take it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> And he says, \u201cYou\u2019re not using that one, so it\u2019s fine, right?\u201d (laughs). Well, it\u2019s not like it\u2019s going anywhere, so I don\u2019t really mind.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/20180131-1_08.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: There are quite a few molds that could work for either of you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s interesting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: This gourd shape could work too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Celadon would look good on it. The original is a bit larger. It\u2019s \u201ca Dutch copy of a copy,\u201d really (laughs). Imari copied Delft, and then I copied that. I think the rim pattern is Dutch.
