I barely knew anything about tableware at the time, but I hurriedly studied it and prepared around ten items. The response was far better than I had imagined\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYou studied in a rush and still got a great response\u2026 It sounds like you were truly suited to making tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nEveryone praised my work. That had never happened to me before in my life. People used something I had made, enjoyed it, and even complimented it (laughs).<br>\r\nIt felt strangely right to me. That made me want to work in tableware production, and through a senior colleague, I was brought into a company where I stayed for ten years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nWhat kind of ten years were they?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nAt first, I couldn\u2019t make much at all. I wasn\u2019t hired because they needed people\u2014in fact, they already had enough staff, but my senior pushed hard to get me in. Apparently he told the president, \u201cThis guy can make any kind of tableware.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nQuite the grand introduction\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nSomething like, \u201cIn return, you\u2019d better work hard,\u201d you know (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nThat\u2019s something to be grateful for, in a way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nAt that point, I had no choice but to give it everything I had. I had to live up to being \u201cthe guy who can do anything with tableware\u201d (laughs). So even after work, I practiced late into the night.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYou couldn\u2019t exactly practice in front of everyone (laughs).  \r\nAnd eventually, you started thinking about becoming independent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThis year marks my eleventh year since going independent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Something Slightly Unlike Anything Else<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nSo, what does \u201ca good piece of tableware\u201d mean to you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI don\u2019t try to define clearly what tableware \u201cshould\u201d be. That said, I do hope that my work looks a little different from others. I love reproductions of ancient ceramics and enjoy looking at others\u2019 work, but personally, I want to create pieces that feel \u201cjust a little unlike anything else.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nThat uniqueness isn\u2019t just about appearance, is it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nIt\u2019s hard to put into words.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180410-1_03.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>A Message to Younger Generations<\/h3>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI also hope more young people will become interested in tableware. I do feel that movement starting to happen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nIt\u2019s encouraging to see more people newly drawn to tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThere are now many more places where people can see tableware. In the past, it was unthinkable for select shops to carry ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYour work seems like it would fit naturally into those spaces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI\u2019ve always felt that these things are all connected.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nPerhaps that\u2019s why your work embraces the strengths of ceramics without feeling overly bound to tradition or clinging to it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nAs I kept working, I began to realize the depth of ceramics, but I think that mindset was there from the start.<br>\r\nIn fact, around my fifth year at the pottery, I was already holding solo exhibitions at rental galleries in Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka, hoping young people would come. But mostly, it was just my friends who showed up. Friends from my high school rugby club would come out of obligation, but they basically had no interest at all (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nA tableware exhibition filled with rugby players\u2014that\u2019s not something you see often (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThey\u2019d say, \u201cKiyooka, I hear you\u2019ve been making jars lately,\u201d and come by. Then they\u2019d introduce me to others saying, \u201cHe\u2019s my classmate\u2014he makes jars up in the mountains.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYou\u2019d be thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t make jars, and I don\u2019t live in the mountains.\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nWhen I\u2019d say, \u201cJust take one you like,\u201d they\u2019d reply, \u201cIf it\u2019s free, sure,\u201d and pick something\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\n(laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>An Experiment from 20 Years Ago<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nEven so, those friends and I went to DC brand shops and vintage stores together, listened to the same music, and talked about movies. Yet for some reason, only my tableware was seen as something completely out of touch with everyday life.<br>\r\nI couldn\u2019t understand why. To me, wearing stylish clothes and shoes was no different from using beautiful tableware. I even brought my work to clothing select shops.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nThat was quite a challenge at the time. How did they respond?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThey\u2019d say, \u201cIt\u2019s not bad, but this isn\u2019t really the place for tableware. Could you take it to a ceramics shop instead?\u201d And I\u2019d reply, \u201cYes\u2026 you\u2019re right,\u201d knowing full well they were right.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nDespite your passion and drive, you seem rather calm about the results.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180410-1_04.jpg\"><br>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nAbove all, I wanted my work to be placed where people of my generation would see it and think, \u201cThere\u2019s something fun like this\u2014there\u2019s a world like this.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYou wanted people to engage with tableware the same way they do with cars, clothes, or music.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nTwenty years ago, it just wasn\u2019t that kind of era. Eventually I started thinking, \u201cThis won\u2019t work.\u201d The response was simply too weak (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Finding One\u2019s Own Place<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nYou make great use of the inherent appeal of ceramics. Visually, your work feels sharp, with an excellent balance of glaze tones, yet broadly speaking, it draws out the beauty of the clay without relying on it too heavily.<br>\r\nAs society becomes more dominated by digital, artificial, and predictable things, people also develop a strong desire for the opposite. Your work seems to contain both. It doesn\u2019t belong entirely to one side, nor does it depend on either. From the perspective of everyday life where tableware is used, your work seems to establish a unique \u201cplace.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI personally like both sides. I don\u2019t want to spend all day on my smartphone, but I also don\u2019t believe everything has to be natural or self-sufficient. I think it would be interesting to incorporate something ceramic-like into what people feel from digital things.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Moments of Hesitation<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you mean by \u201cceramic-like\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nGrowing up in Shigaraki, I\u2019ve come to appreciate the power of clay and glaze\u2014imperfection, unpredictability, and things that can\u2019t be fully controlled or reproduced.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nThere must be times when things go well, and times when they don\u2019t.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI use a gas kiln, and I slightly adjust the reduction timing and peak temperature each time.<br>\r\nSometimes I choose stability over excitement\u2014I hesitate and don\u2019t raise the temperature enough (laughs).<br>\r\nWhen that happens, the results can feel unsatisfying.<br>\r\nI think the pieces I\u2019m most convinced by come when I work with the mindset that \u201cfailure is fine.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<br><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/20180410-1_05.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Oval Plates Make Their First Appearance<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nIs there anything you particularly enjoy making?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> I like wheel throwing. It clearly shows me that I\u2019m still able to grow.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You work with various glazes\u2014olive, ash-white, black\u2026Do you see that range continuing to expand?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThey\u2019re existing glazes, but I\u2019d been experimenting with applying them thickly and firing at very high temperatures. Only recently has it started working well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nWhich glaze is it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nWhite. Suddenly, complex colors unlike anything I\u2019d seen before began to appear. It feels very spring-like, so I\u2019d like to include it in our April two-person exhibition.<br>\r\nI\u2019m also thinking about oval plates now. Honestly, I want them for myself (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Blowing People Away<\/h3>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nIs there anything you want to pursue going forward?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nThese days, there aren\u2019t many glazes that feel completely new. Still, I want to create something that makes people say, \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nThat must require a lot of testing\u2014and many failures.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nBut when you find something, it\u2019s incredibly satisfying. That said, it only works if the form supports it. The atmosphere changes entirely depending on the clay body. Focusing only on glaze research doesn\u2019t work. I want to value bringing out the glaze\u2019s potential.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nOther artists sometimes talk about your glazes.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nSo they talk about them (laughs). But I\u2019m probably not doing anything as complex as people imagine.<br>\r\nI rarely layer multiple glazes or manipulate ash in special ways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Simple.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> You could do many things by making it complex, but\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nPerhaps you understand the fundamentals well. Without understanding them, interpretations become superficial, leading to unnecessarily complex paths\u2014like overthinking a math problem and making it harder than it needs to be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nI wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s anything that impressive, but someday I hope to create something that truly surprises people.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nI look forward to the day when we\u2019re completely blown away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nViewers also need to be ready to be blown away\u2014otherwise, it\u2019s hard to blow them away (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: \r\nSo surprising someone is a joint effort between the maker and the viewer (laughs). We look forward to the two-person exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<strong>Kodo Kiyooka:<\/strong> \r\nLikewise.
