When I tried painting more lightly, it ended up with a look that could also work well in a Western-style setting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Rearranging the original motif into a three-point composition is very much like you. I feel that if each element were made too small, it would lose its appeal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I agree. I felt it was better not to leave too much empty space. \r\nAlso, I was really struck by this sense of movement and curvature. \r\nIn Japanese designs, branches often grow upward from the base, but here the branches appear partway along. I thought, \u201cStarting from the side\u2014that\u2019s interesting!\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_03.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> It\u2019s a very unique way of framing the design, quite different from old Imari, for example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The brushwork feels different from your usual style. Did you consciously change your approach in the outlining and shading?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I usually value speed and momentum, but for this piece I wanted to draw more carefully and neatly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It comes through clearly. So, how would you use this plate?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> For a morning omelet. Pasta would work well too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Something I\u2019ve Always Loved<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_04.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Next is the namasu bowl. It\u2019s a traditional form, but this is your first time making it. What made you decide to create it now?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I\u2019ve always loved the shape of namasu bowls. I had been using namasu bowls made by my teacher, Mitsuo Fujitsuka, for a long time, but I felt that I wasn\u2019t quite ready to make them myself. This time, I thought I might finally be able to.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Was there anything you paid particular attention to when making them?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> To bring out the soft, gentle feel of the scalloped rim, I kept the mold carving to a minimum. Also, if I used my usual glaze, it would feel a bit heavy, so I changed the glaze formula. The crackle also helps prevent the design from looking flat. It\u2019s a very intuitive process, though.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What is the appeal of the namasu bowl for you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> A sense of reassurance. It\u2019s a form that has existed for a long time and that everyone knows, so it feels easy to use without much thought.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You just know it will be easy to use, without overthinking it (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Like a reliable brand. When you think of a namasu bowl, this is the shape that comes to mind.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Iron Painting and Sometsuke<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Now, this diamond-shaped small plate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> This is my first time combining iron painting with sometsuke.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_05.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: When paired with iron painting, the gosu blue looks brighter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Iron painting is fascinating\u2014when it\u2019s present, the white areas can even look slightly creamy. Even with the same glaze, it appears different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And adding iron painting to sometsuke gives it a more colorful impression.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I\u2019ve recently rediscovered how interesting iron painting can be, so I\u2019d like to explore more variations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The brush movement also changes with iron painting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> It\u2019s a bit harder to paint, but unless you draw boldly, the color doesn\u2019t come through. So I paint thicker and darker. Gosu shows exactly as you paint it, but iron comes out more softly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What would you use this for?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Simmered beans, pickles, or even as a soy sauce dish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: This kind of shape is actually very suitable for soy sauce.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I think something slightly elongated works better than a perfect circle. For sashimi, for example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Different Kinds of Elegance<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Next, the flared cup. You took inspiration from French antiques.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_06.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> This was actually hand-carved, not made with a mold.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Those originals are slip-cast, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I think so.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I really like the softness of this piece. It feels like a different kind of elegance from Japanese tableware. \r\nAlso, decorating the rim isn\u2019t very common in Japanese pieces, which makes it interesting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You removed the original handle and turned it into a small bowl. It\u2019s only in white porcelain, right? It seems like other colors could work too\u2026 maybe lapis blue?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_07.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> This one just feels right in white.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: True\u2014lapis blue might make it feel too Japanese.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> And I didn\u2019t feel it would suit it very well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: My apologies (laughs). So how would you use it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> For yogurt, or as a caf\u00e9 au lait bowl.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see\u2014caf\u00e9 au lait in this would look stylish. \r\nWell, it was originally a teacup, so it makes sense.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Small Plates and Small Dishes<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And now, the smaller pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Once I tried making them, I found them surprisingly interesting. \r\nTaking a larger form and making it smaller does make it quite charming.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Small plates usually don\u2019t require as many steps as larger ones, but I thought it would be interesting to put more work into them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> It was a fun process. I wasn\u2019t just scaling them down\u2014I wanted to make sure the original character still came through. For example, the rim balance here follows that of the 21cm plate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/20180620-2_08.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It looks like it would fit a single macaron perfectly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Or a canel\u00e9. Or some chocolates.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You keep mentioning sweets.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I give my daughter a small treat in the morning, and this might be just right for that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I\u2019m sure she\u2019d love that (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>\u201cSo Far\u201d and \u201cFrom Here On\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You always prepare fresh and engaging new works. You can really feel how much you enjoy the process through the pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> This time was a lot of fun too!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Then we look forward to the two-person exhibition with Haruya Abe in June.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Yes. There will be both standard pieces and new works, so I hope people can sense both \u201cwhat has been\u201d and \u201cwhat\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\"
