This one feels very much like your style\u2014fresh and refined. \r\nIt looks simple, but achieving this kind of understated refinement is not easy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_01.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Exactly. It\u2019s either Issey Miyake or me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao (wife) :<\/strong> He says things like that himself. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I want to surprise people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: You always say that before your exhibitions\u2014\u201cI want visitors to be surprised when they walk into the venue.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> He says it every time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Surprise matters. That\u2019s why people go to films or theater\u2014because they are, in some way, surprised.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: If everything is predictable, it may not draw people in as much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> If everything is predictable, it\u2019s boring.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: And you\u2019ve continued doing this for decades.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> It\u2019s the same as the \u201chook\u201d in rakugo or manzai.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> As expected of someone from Osaka\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> It has nothing to do with being from Osaka. Anyone, anywhere, wants to capture people\u2019s attention.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: You would have done the same kind of thing in any profession, wouldn\u2019t you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> That\u2019s just how his thinking is wired.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> \u2026Yes. That\u2019s what makes it enjoyable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Pink is a color not often seen in ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> It does exist, but not many people use such a clean, bright pink. Also, I don\u2019t apply glaze over the pink areas.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: If you applied glaze on top, it would become glossy and flat, and the brushwork wouldn\u2019t come through like this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Normally, people are taught to avoid showing brushstrokes\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: In your case, even the overglaze painting has a sense of movement. Usually it\u2019s applied more like layering color on top.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> That\u2019s what we\u2019re normally taught. (laughs) His work feels like it\u2019s half-drawn rather than fully painted. Even in the pine motif pieces, you can see areas of white left exposed\u2014normally that would be considered incorrect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_02.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Had he entered ceramics through a more conventional training path, things might have turned out differently.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Maybe so.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Everyone Has Their Own Way<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: It has now been about four or five years since the three of you\u2014Mansaku, Noriko (wife), and Shohei (son)\u2014began working together.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Each of you is quite different. Not only in work, but even in how much you speak (Shohei was working at the time, so he barely joined the conversation).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shohei Nakao :<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_03.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Collaboration always involves trial and error, but when customers are pleased with what we make, it gives us confidence and motivation. In the end, you never know what will become a hit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Often the piece you think is your \u201cmasterpiece\u201d\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> No one pays attention to it. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Joy of Creation<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: You have built a very distinctive personal style. When working collaboratively like this, new ideas naturally emerge. How does it feel to see those ideas develop together?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> It expands outward, and that\u2019s interesting. I want the two of them to keep doing whatever they like, freely.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: That\u2019s quite an open stance. Even though you already have an established style, you don\u2019t try to preserve it strictly\u2014you actually encourage expansion.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> He has always been the type to break down even his own established work. (laughs) The standard pieces remain, but he rarely goes back to older work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_04.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I suppose I simply enjoy creating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> It\u2019s not that he dislikes older work, but the desire to make something new is always stronger.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I\u2019m 73 now. Most ceramic artists of my generation have already faded away. Constantly creating something new feels about right.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: That sounds a bit harsh, even if you don\u2019t mean it that way. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> No, it\u2019s true. The same applies to office workers or anyone else\u2014at a certain age, many people fade out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: In ceramics, people often try to gradually scale down work toward retirement. Reducing output little by little\u2026 though perhaps that\u2019s not your approach.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> No, it\u2019s more like running a full marathon while out of breath. (laughs) But whatever the job, people are all working hard\u2014and that\u2019s what matters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>\u201cWho is \u2018everyone\u2019?\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> People now take photos of their own cooking on phones, so we see home meals much more often. It\u2019s useful and also enjoyable for us as makers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Because many photos are taken from directly above, irregularly shaped pieces are more noticeable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Flower-rimmed designs have really increased. \u201cEveryone likes flower rims,\u201d people say.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Who exactly is \u201ceveryone\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> People in Japan.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I have flower-rimmed pieces too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Not those kinds. I mean rims shaped like flowers. Some have carved ridges, different variations\u2026 and people even paint on them. Like the ones Kotaro Matsuura makes\u2014very charming.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Matsuura came by recently as well. We talked quite a bit.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: It\u2019s interesting that someone over 30 years younger and you can meet on equal footing as makers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Interaction with Younger Artists<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> From your perspective at Hanada, younger makers must also be interesting, right?<br \/>\r\nI\u2019m always thinking I\u2019d like to meet more interesting young people too. Competition among makers helps talent grow. I like young people who are a bit cheeky.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: You were apparently quite intense when you were younger\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> You need to be a bit cheeky when you\u2019re young. Eventually everyone becomes more rounded with age. But nowadays people try to appear gentle from the start, especially to be liked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Many younger people tend to keep things more internal now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I see. Still, I think a bit of rebelliousness is good. \r\nI find that kind of person hard to dislike.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: That sounds like encouragement from you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Playing Card Pattern<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: What do you think of this soup bowl?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_05.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I changed the handles to a horizontal position so the pieces would stack better.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: The original version had vertical handles\u2014I liked that too. This one is shaped by Shohei, and Noriko did the painting, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> I\u2019ve always liked playing card motifs, and I wanted to use them someday as a design. I had also seen similar motifs in Ko-Kutani ware, with clovers and hearts combined.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I think this one will be a hit. That\u2019s my intuition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Suddenly\u2026 intuition\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Strange intuition. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Collection<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I have a large collection of animation original drawings.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> He suddenly changes the topic\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I was thinking of displaying a few of them on the wall during the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: That\u2019s interesting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Of course, they would be not for sale.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Understood. But they\u2019re rare, so people might ask to buy them\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Not for sale.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Honestly, I\u2019d prefer if he sold them. (laughs) We already have too many.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: That many?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shohei Nakao :<\/strong> It\u2019s quite something.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I\u2019ll go bring some. (goes to another room)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: It\u2019s nice for people to see a side of him beyond ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Is that really okay? Visitors might wonder what they\u2019re looking at\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: I think it will be fine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Nostalgia<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> (returns) Here they are. Something like this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: There are so many. We won\u2019t have space left for the ceramics exhibition. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> This is Osamu Tezuka.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Original drawings?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Oh, Nils. That\u2019s nostalgic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> This is original artwork for a confectionery package.<br \/>\r\nAnd this is Ultraman\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Maybe we should narrow it down to two or three pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Five or six would be fine too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Well\u2026 could we avoid anything too violent?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> It\u2019s not violent. Everyone knows Ultra-man.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Yes, but here Ultra-man is having his arm bitten by a monster\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> That\u2019s the interesting part.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> Then let\u2019s have you choose, and Mr. Matsui can select from there. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Fine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Atom would be nice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> No Atom.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Oh? I thought I saw it earlier.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Ah, that one. Jet Marte. It\u2019s \u201cwillow under the loach (a follow-up flop).\u201d The ears are slightly different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: It&#8217;s \u201cloach under the willow\u201d\u2026(laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> I think you\u2019ve got that the other way around. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Well, it didn\u2019t really become a hit. A classic \u201cwillow under the loach.\u201d situation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> Jet Marte is extremely rare. It\u2019s probably valuable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: You mean you\u2019d sell it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> No, not for sale.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> I don\u2019t even know when he collected all of this. At this point, I can\u2019t tell whether ceramics or this is the main collection\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Enjoyment of \u201cYoroke\u201d Lines<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Next is this \u201cyoroke\u201d pattern. Made by Shohei.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shohei Nakao :<\/strong> I tried several sample variations and chose this one. Some with thin lines, some thicker\u2026 I felt this best captured the charm of the wavering lines(yoroke).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_06.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: The colored dots are by Mansaku, right? \r\nVery typical of him in palette.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mansaku Nakao :<\/strong> I plan to expand this pattern further.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/20180815-1_07.jpg\" \/>\r\n\r\n<h3>Thirty Years\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;\">Hanada: Noriko, after 30 years observing Mansaku closely, have you noticed changes?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Noriko Nakao :<\/strong> What he makes keeps changing, but his fundamental stance hasn\u2019t changed.
