It depends on the hardness and softness of the coils.<br>\r\nNormally, when using the wheel, the clay is tightened repeatedly to make it uniform, which results in a clean finish. But since I don\u2019t do that, the thickness of the base varies slightly from part to part.<br>\r\nThat variation becomes the natural distortion.<br>\r\nWhen I first make it, the shape is neat, but it changes during firing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000What do you mean by the \u201chardness and softness\u201d of the coils? <br> \r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Because I form them roughly by hand, some parts of the coil are harder and others are softer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/20181003-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"\u5409\u7530\u5b66\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\"><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>A Painful Process<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000Coil-building also seems to be a time-consuming process.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Yes, for example, making a rice bowl probably takes about five times longer than the usual method.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000It must have been tough until you got used to it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000It was, but I never disliked it, not even once.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/20181003-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"\u5409\u7530\u5b66\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\"><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000Does the raw clay contain various materials?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Yes, there are sharp stones, and sometimes even pieces of wood.<br>\r\nWhen I\u2019m throwing on the wheel and one of those sticks in my hand\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000That sounds painful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000It is! (laughs)<br>\r\nBut I want to keep working with clay that\u2019s as close as possible to its natural state, so it can\u2019t be helped.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/20181003-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"\u5409\u7530\u5b66\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\"><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Not Touching Too Much, Not Thinking Too Much<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000Watching you work, you seem very efficient. Your movements are simplified and flow smoothly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000I suppose so. I have a background in science, so I like calculating and organizing processes systematically. That may be why it looks that way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/20181003-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"\u5409\u7530\u5b66\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\"><br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000What do you keep in mind when shaping the clay?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Not touching the clay too much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000What do you mean by \u201cnot touching too much\u201d? <br>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000In the past, I used to handle it quite a lot.<br>\r\nBut I realized that the less I touch it, the more natural and unforced it feels.<br>\r\nIf you spend too much time, you start trying to make it look perfect, and that takes away its charm.<br>\r\nSo, especially when trimming on the wheel, I try to finish as quickly as possible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000I see.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Otherwise, the piece ends up looking sluggish.<br>\r\nAnd if I think too much while working, the result becomes stiff, so I try to separate my head from my hands.<br>\r\nWhen I\u2019m making the coils or forming the shape, I try to be completely in the moment.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Ma (Space)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000Has your image of what you want to create changed since you first started?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Not really. I still imagine food when I make my pieces.<br>\r\nI\u2019ve loved fishing since I was young, and I started pottery because I wanted to serve the fish I caught on my own plates.<br>\r\nSo I quickly picture what dish would go with which plate, and I always value the sense of \u201cma,\u201d or space.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000What do you mean by \u201cma\u201d? <br>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000It\u2019s about a sense of balance or proportion\u2014how the food sits within the vessel, how it fills the space.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/20181003-1_10.jpg\" alt=\"\u5409\u7530\u5b66\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc\"><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Pleasure of Feeling with the Hands<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000When you use your own pieces, what do you notice?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000The tactile pleasure\u2014how it feels in the hand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000You enjoy sake, don\u2019t you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Especially with sake cups (laughs). They just fit so comfortably in the hand.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000Is there something you\u2019d like to try in the future?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000I\u2019d like to work with even rougher clay\u2014something like \u201cthe ultimate in unworkable clay\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\nClay full of stones, extremely difficult to shape, the kind nobody else would want to use. <br>\r\nIn the end, I just love clay itself.<br>\r\nThe vessel may take shape through my will, but honestly, I sometimes feel that you could just fire the clay as it is and serve food on it (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:\u3000So you\u2019ll continue using the coil-building technique?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong>\u3000Of course.
