He originally majored in metal engraving in art school, but after graduation he worked in wood carving and later became an instructor, teaching various crafts. About twenty years ago, I found some of his materials in the storage shed at my parents\u2019 house. This kind of thing. Well\u2026 I just quietly took it with me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: The year is 1940\u2026? May I take a photo of the inside?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Hmm\u2026 I wonder what my grandfather would think\u2026 I should\u2019ve asked while he was alive (laughs). Please photograph only the cover, if you don\u2019t mind. Sorry.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (Looking at the materials) This is pottery, right? Korean?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> This was before the war. There were wonderful traditional ceramics in Korea at the time, and there was a movement to further develop them as an industry by building on those traditions. My grandfather went there as an instructor, and I think these materials are from that period. He probably showed these to the local artisans saying, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you try making something like this?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Just as the people of that time made what they were shown, you\u2019ve ended up making them too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Something like that. I\u2019m just looking at them on my own, though (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Earlier we saw a piece with a fish motif, and you also incorporate fish motifs now. So these materials were the trigger.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Yes. But if I simply copied these drawings exactly as they are, it honestly wouldn\u2019t be very interesting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: \u2026Well, I can\u2019t exactly agree and say \u201cYes, it\u2019s not interesting,\u201d about something your grandfather drew (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Hahaha, true. So I give them a more contemporary\u2014well, more \u201cmy own\u201d\u2014interpretation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Looking at these materials must have given you moments to imagine your grandfather\u2019s work back then.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Yes, I found it fascinating.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So you were enjoying it after all\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> There was more than this\u2014among his belongings were bamboo craft pieces decorated with a heated metal stamp, and wood carvings as well. There were also pieces made by the artisans he had instructed back then. Every time something new turned up, I\u2019d go \u201cWhoa\u2026\u201d. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What a surprise. Your grandfather did all sorts of things.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Although he specialized in metal engraving, as an instructor he apparently had to be proficient in everything.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n<h3>Starting With Karakusa Patterns\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px;\">Hanada: You\u2019d been looking at the materials for a long time, but you only recently began actually making pieces from them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I always thought, \u201cI\u2019ll do it someday,\u201d but the right timing never really came. It would\u2019ve been quicker to just start the moment it crossed my mind, I guess.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Having something new you want to try is a wonderful thing. You even showed me the karakusa work you\u2019re doing right now. Do you have any other motifs in mind?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> At the moment I\u2019m fully occupied with organizing the karakusa patterns, but I do have ideas for the future. I still haven\u2019t found the perfect way to execute them, so please look forward to what comes next.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: I imagine the overall feel of the finished pieces will also change. How does it feel to make them?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> It was harder\u2014far harder\u2014than I expected.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs) So you mean much harder than you expected.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I always start from \u201cOkay\u2026 so how should I approach this?\u201d so the thinking time before beginning the work itself gets long. I think I\u2019ll get used to it eventually. Also, the difference between how the design looks after the initial sketching and how it looks after carving is huge.<br>\r\nUnlike geometric patterns, you see the motif as an outline at first, but after carving, your eyes focus on the inside of the lines. So even if I think I\u2019ve drawn something big, it ends up looking small. Like, \u201cHuh? It\u2019s tiny\u2026 what happened?\u201d and suddenly there\u2019s so much empty space (laughs). Everything looks really small.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: The fact that you\u2019re explaining this so passionately means it must have ended up really small (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Probably because your eyes are drawn to the carved lines. Anyway\u2014it\u2019s small. And once it\u2019s fired, it gets even smaller, until eventually it just disappears (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Never Truly Random<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px;\">Hanada: How was drawing the lines?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> It requires moving the blade even more smoothly than with geometric designs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: With geometric continuous patterns, rhythm and tempo are important, and they\u2019re essentially combinations and repetitions of fixed movements. But with figurative motifs, are there more random movements?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> It\u2019s challenging, but it\u2019s not that random. In fact, the increase in curves and other patterns is what enabled me to start working with figurative designs. It\u2019s more complex, but the fundamental principles of the work haven\u2019t changed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Creating Depth<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px;\">Hanada: How was the first firing?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> At first I thought, \u201cOh no\u2026\u201d (laughs). \u201cIt\u2019s hopeless.\u201d It looked flat. Even though I carved it specifically to create depth, it ended up looking flatter than if I had just drawn it with a pencil\u2026 (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What happened?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I was excited, and I think I put too much of my own feelings into it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That\u2019s wonderful\u2014 even after all these years, there\u2019s work that gets you so excited you can\u2019t control yourself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Well\u2026 that\u2019s one way to put it (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Did you pay attention to carving \u201cdeep\u201d and \u201cshallow\u201d as well?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_10.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> As for depth, I can generally predict the gradation, so that wasn\u2019t too much of a problem.<br>\r\nMore than that, because the carving direction isn\u2019t consistent, I had to think about how to proceed so I could carve the whole design smoothly, and how to make the carved marks look rhythmic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: My impression is that the combination of exquisite technique with newfound freedom and playfulness has made your work even more appealing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I\u2019m happy to hear that.<\/p><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Continuing This Work<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px;\">Hanada: As a maker, what do you find interesting about carving? You\u2019ve continued to do work that many other artists don\u2019t attempt.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I\u2019ve never really thought about whether I\u2019m suited for it or whether I like it or not, but as I keep doing it, it feels more and more natural in my hands. At the same time, even after all these years, I feel like there are still discoveries waiting to be made. I\u2019m always aware of that. Maybe that duality is part of it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Your tools are constantly evolving too. Earlier, you were making a new tool right in the middle of working.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I change the number of blades, their orientation, the spacing between them\u2026. As I move forward, I find tools I don\u2019t have yet. And when I need something at that moment, I make it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_11.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/20190717-1_12.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhiro Masubuchi Interview 2019\">\r\n\r\n<h3>The Proper Place for Fire<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px;\">Hanada: Looking ahead to your next exhibition. \r\nIt seems you\u2019ll also have more color variations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Yes\u2014amber glaze and off-white. \r\nI think the cherry blossom pink might just make it in time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Anything you\u2019d like to add? \r\nPerhaps something amusing\u2026?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Lately my head is full of the fire (* there was a recent fire right next door to his place).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So you\u2019ll move forward undeterred by the fire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Yes.  Fire should stay where it belongs\u2014inside the kiln.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Quite right.
