(Below Hanada \u2013)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I\u2019ve liked making things since I was a child, so I majored in ceramics at Kyoto Seika University.<br>\r\nAt that time, the ceramics department was only in its third year since being established, and I vaguely thought, \u201cIt\u2019s new and looks interesting,\u201d so I decided to go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you hadn\u2019t specifically decided on ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Honestly, it could have been wood, metal, or stone. \r\nIt was a choice made by chance, but looking back, I\u2019m really glad it was ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It was fate, then.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_02.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Gradually Moving Forward<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What did you do after graduating from university?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> For some reason, I worked as a &#8220;salaryman&#8221; for just two and a half months, but as expected, I started feeling drained while doing it\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Then I apprenticed under Hiroshi Kondo and stayed there for about five and a half years.<br>\r\nIt was a studio focused mainly on tea sets in underglaze blue.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How was that experience?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> At first, I couldn\u2019t even knead the clay properly.<br>\r\nThere were four or five apprentices, and we learned from the senior apprentices\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So it felt like you were gradually progressing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Yes. The master did all the painting, but toward the end, I was allowed to throw pots and flower containers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of person was your master?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> He was very kind to me. \r\nWe went to the sauna together, and he would say, \u201cSugimoto, go ahead and play mahjong with my friends in my place,\u201d and things like that\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I can somehow imagine you being well liked by your seniors.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I hear he used to be strict, but for us, the age difference was so big that he might have thought of us like grandchildren.<br>\r\nWell\u2026 maybe he did scold me, but I just don\u2019t remember (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_03.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<h3>What Nighttime Conversations Gave Me<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Kyoto has many horizontal connections among artists, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Many ceramicists who knew my master would often come by.<br>\r\nHearing their professional conversations with the master, I absorbed knowledge without even realizing it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You must have gained a lot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Everything that forms the foundation of who I am today comes from that time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>In Shimane, Every Week to the Mountains\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After that, you became independent. Was it from the beginning at this location?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I spent three years in Shimane. There, I became friends with people who hunted with rifles.<br>\r\nEvery week, we would go to the mountains and hunt boar\u2026 It was fun.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Judging by that story, it seems like those memories are bigger than the pottery itself\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Hahaha (laughs), now that you mention it\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You speak so happily about every memory. After three years in Shimane, you came here?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s right.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_04.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Adding Painting to Kohiki<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Your ceramics are based on classic techniques, but your style is chic and elegant, instantly recognizable as yours. I also like the soft painting on your Kohiki pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_05.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I originally started practicing by drawing straight lines on curved surfaces, which led to the striped patterns.<br>\r\nI inserted colored glaze between lines of cobalt. I referred to Shimacho (stripe pattern books).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_06.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: From there, various paintings developed. Are your designs self-taught?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Yes. I\u2019ve always liked painting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_07.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Where do you get your motifs from?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I sketch plants and flowers around my neighborhood.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_08.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n<h3>Ceramics I Admire<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Are there ceramics you personally like?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I could never compare to masters like Kenzan Ogata, Mokubei Aoki, or Eishin Okuda, but I deeply admire their work. In terms of forms and motifs, I am particularly drawn to Tsutsumukai and Tatsutagawa&#8230;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What about their work appeals to you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Perhaps the \u201cplayfulness.\u201d They may act like producers, but ultimately, they clearly enjoy themselves.<br>\r\nIt shows in their work, whether you imitate it or not. It could be said it has become art. If possible, I would like to imitate everything from start to finish (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Not Sure, But For Now\u2026<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019ve started preparing the wood-fired kiln as well.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I\u2019m relocating a climbing kiln that was built in the city about 50 years ago.<br>\r\nI hope to complete it in the next couple of years and start firing porcelain as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_09.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How do you relocate a kiln?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know (laughs). Take it apart, memorize it in my head, remember the drawings, take photos\u2026 Something like that.<br>\r\nAnyway, I\u2019ll make it and fire it once.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s very much like you (laughs). Is the kiln large?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> Not that big. It has four chambers including the waste chamber, but I plan to reduce it to three.<br>\r\nHowever, the craftsman who originally built it said, \u201cThis is the limit of smallness.\u201d \r\nI\u2019m not sure if reducing from four to three is a problem, but if it is, I can always add later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/20190911-3_10.jpg\" alt=\"Taro Sugimoto Interview\">\r\n\r\n<h3>White Porcelain<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Looking forward to your three-person exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Taro Sugimoto:<\/strong> The white porcelain pieces have increased in variety, such as rin-ka shapes. I\u2019m making larger bowls and also preparing teapots.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Thank you.
