Those moments were quite frequent.<br>\r\nIn school, I liked arts and crafts, home economics, and physical education.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see. Your current work seems to be a mix of those three areas.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Exactly. Naturally, I went on to an art-focused high school.<br>\r\nAround that time, I realized I was more suited to three-dimensional work than to flat, two-dimensional art.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_02.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<h3>Encounters<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What did you major in at university?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Architecture\u2014but I found drawing blueprints painful (laughs).<br>\r\nDuring my third-year internship, while my classmates went to architectural firms, I chose to stay and work with a miyadaiku (traditional Japanese temple carpenter) in Niigata.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How was that experience?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Usually, temple carpenters don\u2019t do residential work, but this man was different.<br>\r\nHe first took me to a factory that produced mass-market homes and said, \u201cThink for yourself what you make of this.\u201d<br>\r\nI didn\u2019t understand the meaning of that at the time, but now I think I do.<br>\r\nEven within carpentry, there are many types of work, and I think he wanted to show me both extremes from the start\u2014even areas outside his own field.<br>\r\nIn the end, I worked in custom furniture, in industrial manufacturing, and now as a craftsman-artist.<br>\r\nI think the reason I\u2019ve been able to adapt to changing environments without hesitation is thanks to that early experience. It taught me to always consider what role I should play in each situation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So that experience became a turning point that led to your current work.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Yes. He used to keep me up drinking at night (laughs).<br>\r\nHe was apparently one of the craftsmen involved in restoring Yakushiji Temple in Nara, and his stories from that time were fascinating.<br>\r\nThat was also when I started to be drawn more to craftsmanship itself rather than to architecture.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_03.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<h3>The Information in a Drawing<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After graduating, you joined a custom furniture company.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> I stayed there for seven years. I really enjoyed thinking about how to approach each order.<br>\r\nThe information contained in the drawings we received was usually quite limited.<br>\r\nHow you handle the rest makes a huge difference in the final quality.<br>\r\nTo me, it felt like playing shogi (Japanese chess)\u2014a matter of how efficiently you can reach checkmate.<br>\r\nThe simpler the moves, the stronger the result.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>To Milan, Italy<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And then you went to Milan.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Yes, I spent seven years there.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Why did you choose Milan?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> At the time, Scandinavian furniture was also flourishing, but Italy had a glamorous image that didn\u2019t seem to suit my character (laughs).<br>\r\nI thought it would be better to go somewhere that had what I lacked.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That was about 20 years ago, wasn\u2019t it? What was Italy like back then?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Many of the postwar \u201cmaestro\u201d designers were still active then.<br>\r\nBefore the war, being close to the Mediterranean, Italy was known for luxurious interior design\u2014like ship interiors.<br>\r\nAnyway, not understanding the language and being surrounded by people with such different temperaments was a big surprise.<\/p>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_09.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The temperament was really different, wasn\u2019t it?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> Completely laid-back\u2014or maybe just kind of loose (laughs).<br>\r\nThe hardest part was mediating between people like that and Japanese companies. The vibes were totally different.<br>\r\nAt one furniture fair, I wrote down every detail on the drawings to avoid any misunderstanding. But they said, \u201cYou don\u2019t need such detailed instructions\u2014leave it to me.\u201d And then, on the day, nothing was ready. When I asked why, they said, \u201cYou never told me that.\u201d (laughs)<br>\r\nEven after the fair started, they were still painting the walls.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Weren\u2019t they at least worried and trying to hurry internally?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> If they were, they wouldn\u2019t be taking coffee breaks so often while working (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Italy, Scandinavia, Japan\u2026<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How would you compare the quality of work?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> On average, the Japanese are far more consistent. But Italy has that 1% of absolute geniuses.<br>\r\nThe truly great ones have extraordinary the skill of \u201cThinking\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The Skill of \u201cThinking\u201d\u2026<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> The designer I assisted, Enzo Mari, believed that \u201ca designer\u2019s role is to add value to the worker\u2019s labor and thereby elevate their lives.\u201d That was his philosophy.<\/p>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_08.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What was your relationship with Enzo Mari like?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> My job was to listen to his requests and make prototypes beside him.<br>\r\nBut halfway through, he would often take the saw from me himself (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Even among designers, national character really shows.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> For example, in Scandinavia\u2014where I visited several times\u2014people are serious and remind me of Japan.<br>\r\nDesigners there must fully understand how things are made. Many have actually worked in furniture factories before becoming designers. I think that\u2019s a very sincere way of making things.<br>\r\nIn Italy, on the other hand, they start designing without worrying too much about the process.<br>\r\nBut that, too, leads to a dialogue between designer and maker that results in something good. In that sense, perhaps it\u2019s a country that nurtures genius.<br>\r\nItalian designers also love to debate.<br>\r\nEvery night they\u2019d talk endlessly about their philosophies\u2014about the essence of design itself.<br>\r\nSometimes it went as far as, \u201cNot designing is the ultimate form of design.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_04.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<h3>Technique, Materials, and Gratitude<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you value most in your work?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> I want to keep pursuing technique.<br>\r\nI\u2019m always looking for both new technologies and forgotten traditional ones\u2014for my own skills as well as for tools.<br>\r\nToday, tools and materials that used to be hard to find\u2014even from overseas\u2014are easily accessible.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s a good time to be working.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_05.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: New technologies and tools often add new dimensions to existing work, don\u2019t they?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> The forms we can make fundamentally depend on the tools we use.<br>\r\nWhen new technologies emerge, even the details change.<br>\r\nAs a result, the nature of the work itself evolves.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You also regularly look for various types of wood.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> The materials available on the market are stable, but they\u2019re also uniform\u2014nothing really stands out.<br>\r\nFor my work, the individuality of the wood matters a lot, so I sometimes cut my own or source entire logs.<br>\r\nI\u2019m very grateful to the local forestry workers who support me in this.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/20200408-2_06.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Hitoshi Fujisaki\">\r\n<h3>For the Next Generation<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What are your thoughts for the future?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Hitoshi Fujisaki:<\/strong> I\u2019ll keep creating as I always have.<br>\r\nBut I\u2019ve started to think about the next generation too.<br>\r\nIf woodworking relies only on perseverance and spirit, it will keep shrinking.<br>\r\nWe need a sustainable system where valuable work is properly compensated, customers are satisfied, and everyone benefits\u2014otherwise, it won\u2019t last.<br>\r\nIn that sense, I might be close to Enzo\u2019s
