For example, with imo shochu (sweet potato spirit), if the rim is too thin, the drinking experience feels too light.<br>\r\nShochu should have some weight to it, so I prefer a thicker rim for that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How about the feel in the hand?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I made the foot a bit higher.<br>\r\nUsually it\u2019s about 8mm to 1cm, but this time it\u2019s 1.5cm.<br>\r\nThat way, even when you serve something hot, the heat doesn\u2019t transfer too much to your hand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you ever use it for noodles?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> It actually goes surprisingly well with Vietnamese pho.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see. The color of the coriander would look nice in it.<\/p>\r\n<br><br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: This bowl looks like a convenient, easy-to-use size.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> That also comes from changes in my eating habits.<br>\r\nI wanted something just right for small side dishes like nikujaga or ohitashi.<br>\r\nOf course, it can be used as a personal serving bowl, or as a shared serving bowl for two people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: In contrast, the foot on this one isn\u2019t very prominent.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I rounded it.<br>It turned out nicely during the prototype stage.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How do you usually develop your prototypes?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Usually, I start with a dish I want to serve or a way I want to eat, jot it down when it comes to mind, and then bring it to life in the studio.<br>\r\nBut for this bowl, the form came first.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see. This form seems quite versatile.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> It goes well with simmered chicken liver, too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: As expected from you, a lover of evening drinks (laughs).<br>By the way, could you tell us your \u201cTop 3 drinking snacks\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Number one is sashimi, especially sardines.<br>\r\nI don\u2019t marinate them in vinegar\u2014just with ginger and soy sauce.<br>\r\nNumber two is miso-simmered marucho (small intestines). Very fatty, but delicious.<br>\r\nNumber three is stir-fried meat and vegetables\u2014I enjoy experimenting with different spices.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Sounds fun.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> It is (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<br><br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Next, let\u2019s talk about the oval plate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> It\u2019s meant for breakfast\u2014scrambled eggs, sausage, and a croissant fit nicely on it.<br>\r\nI actually don\u2019t eat much breakfast myself, but my bread-loving wife asked me to make a \u201cbreakfast plate.\u201d<br>\r\nI made the surface flat.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Perhaps because of that, the Oribe glaze doesn\u2019t pool in the center, giving the whole piece a smooth, glossy look.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s a different kind of beauty from your usual work.<br>\r\nAlso, you\u2019ve made several oval pieces before\u2014what image did you have in mind for this one?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Since I had bread in mind, I made it more linear than rounded.<\/p>\r\n<br><br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How about the 6- and 7-inch plates?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_10.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I used a method I\u2019d never tried before.<br>\r\nNormally, when making flat plates, I flatten coils on the wheel.<br>\r\nThis time, I made it as flat as possible, flipped it over, tapped it even flatter, and let it dry.<br>\r\nAs the clay dries, it naturally tries to return to its original form\u2014but that slight rebound gives it just the right finish.<\/p>\r\n<br><br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Flat plates are wonderful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_12.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> The idea came when I was at a nearby Italian restaurant and saw carpaccio served on a flat glass plate. I thought, \u201cI\u2019ll try making this in Oribe.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<br><br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The \u201cTorn Bowl\u201d has a very ceramic-like name.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> At first, I tore the edges much more dramatically, but I went a bit too far (laughs), and it started to lose functionality. So I made the edges gentler.<br>\r\nIn the past, they were much more torn.<br>\r\nI still make them the same way, stretching the clay only from the inside during forming. That\u2019s why the shape ends up naturally uneven.<br>\r\nSince I don\u2019t touch the outside at all, the texture remains raw and natural, giving it a wild feeling.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s a method that can only be done by hand-building with coils, so I feel it\u2019s a style that\u2019s very much my own.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you usually serve in it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Nimono (simmered dishes), things like taro or konnyaku saut\u00e9ed together&#8230; that sort of food.<br>\r\nAlso, stir-fried tomato and egg.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: They all sound like they\u2019d go perfectly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/20201012-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Manabu Yoshida 2020\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Could you give us a few words for the upcoming exhibition?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I often learn unexpected ways of using my work from
