I even made bag for field trip\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Handmade bag for field trip! They had a clear purpose, didn\u2019t they? I wonder what kind of bag it turned out to be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> That\u2019s the thing\u2014the bag I made back then didn\u2019t look very field trip-like at all\u2026<br>\r\nIt was more like a suitcase, about this size, with a zipper that opened the top completely, about 10cm thick, roughly A4 size\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s basically an attache case (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> Exactly, and it even had a handle on top\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Like a businessman coming straight from the office to field trip.<\/p>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_01.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Encounter with Glass<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After that, you went on to art university.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> I naturally wanted to do art-related work because I liked making things and my mother had always been painting.<br>\r\nIt took me a little time to get into art university, but that\u2019s where I encountered glass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_02.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So your first encounter with glass was at university.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> At Tama Art University, there was a program called three-dimensional design. I thought, \u201cIt\u2019s three-dimensional, it\u2019s design, sounds perfect!\u201d<br>\r\nAs for materials, you could choose metal or glass, and I was amazed by the molten, flowing glass\u2026<br>\r\nIt wasn\u2019t just \u201cbeautiful,\u201d it was more like, \u201cWhat is this?\u201d<br>\r\nGlass processes are easy to understand, and it looks interesting visually, doesn\u2019t it? Watching the senior students making things also looked really cool.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That vague admiration is important.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> \r\nI still feel a bit uneasy with glassblowing.Even if it goes well today, it doesn\u2019t mean it will tomorrow.\r\nYou have to think about what went wrong today, but not dwell on it, and focus on improving for tomorrow. Well, I\u2019ve only recently been able to think like that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_03.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Gorilla Glass Garage (GGG)<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After graduation, you went to the U.S. with Ken (her husband and also a glass artist), and upon returning, you founded Gorilla Glass Garage (GGG) in western Izu.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_04.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> I started taking glassblowing seriously after we set up the workshop.<br>\r\nBefore that, I was mainly doing kiln work, but once we installed glassblowing equipment, I had no choice but to work with glassblowing, and naturally my work increasingly involved finishing with glassblowing.<br>\r\nThis inevitably led to a style of working together as a couple.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Collaboration with assistants is also important in glasswork.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> I actually enjoy assisting\u2014especially helping Ken make goblets. Assisting on goblets might actually be the most fun thing I do right now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Your own Murrine work is also going well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> Actually, the pieces I think are \u201cthe best\u201d are usually not popular at all (laughs).<br>\r\nThere\u2019s a complete mismatch there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Didn\u2019t you want them to come back to you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> Let\u2019s just say that\u2019s the case (laughs).<\/p><br><br>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Charm of Murrine<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Currently, your main work is Murrine and lace. What do you find attractive about them? Murrine and lace involve various elements in their processes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_05.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> For me, the charm of Murrine is that before facing the challenging glassblowing tasks, I get to enjoy the fun time of arranging the Murrine.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_06.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> And then, the patterns in the Murrine shift with the heat, so even if the patterns are the same, no two pieces are ever identical.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_07.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> The Murrine I make are all simple. I don\u2019t obsess over individual Murrine; instead, I enjoy the combination of patterns, colors, and arrangement. I think the final result is something that only Murrine work can achieve.<br>\r\nI like continuous patterns\u2014like polka dots in wallpaper or textiles.<br>\r\nAnd with glass, you can make that happen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you plan the overall composition from the start?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> No. I start by going to the parts area and thinking, \u201cI made this yesterday, so let\u2019s use it as the main element,\u201d and then I decide what colors to pair with it.<br>\r\nI make things based on the idea at that moment. For example, if it starts to look like some kind of traditional costume, I\u2019ll adjust the colors accordingly, or if it feels fresh, I\u2019ll think, \u201cToday it\u2019s a fresh style.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_08.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That improvisation brings out the lively atmosphere in your work. Your pieces are bright and uplifting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> But the first pieces I made were chic, just clear and black.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_09.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s surprising.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> Later, I added colors and realized, \u201cAh, I really love colors.\u201d It\u2019s fun.<br>\r\nIn Izu, there are always flowers blooming somewhere\u2026 more broadly, not just flowers, but the sea and mountains are colorful too. Those things naturally become part of me, I think.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/20220810-2_10.jpg\" alt=\"Harumi Ikushima Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Many fans are captivated by this unique world you create.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> I\u2019m not very comfortable appearing in public or interacting with people. I connect with people through making glass. I think I\u2019m given opportunities to interact with people through my work.<br>\r\nOnce, someone who purchased an ice cream glass told me, \u201cUsing it is really fun,\u201d and that made me very happy. It\u2019s the greatest encouragement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Looking ahead to Hanada\u2019s exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Harumi Ikushima:<\/strong> It\u2019s of course fun to use the vessels as they are, but the other day I made a single-color rim plate and paired it as a saucer with a striped dessert glass. The combinations are endless. That\u2019s really fun.<br>\r\nDepending on the food, the time, or the occasion, there are so many ways to enjoy them. I hope people can have fun with my vessels in various ways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I\u2019m looking forward to the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img
