You can see this clearly in forged tools.<br> We also care deeply about the quality of the materials themselves, such as steel.<br> This falls under metallurgy\u2014there are many types of steel materials.<br> Simply put, carbon hardens steel, but you can add chromium for rust resistance and make stainless steel, add rare metals, use lasers, apply pressing methods, use special solutions, or supercool the steel after hardening\u2026<br> There are countless approaches.<\/p>\r\n \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kinds of materials do you personally use most often?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> I mostly use stainless steel. I cut and shape it all by hand.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do your knives represent for the user?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> A companion\u2026 I suppose. Like a car you keep for years, or a pair of shoes you always end up wearing.<br> You can use it as a kitchen knife, for mountain work\u2014really for everyday tasks of any kind.<br> Handmade knives aren\u2019t about being \u201cgenerally convenient for everyone,\u201d but rather about \u201cmatching the specific hands of each user.\u201d<br> If someone has poor eyesight, I adjust the usability; if they have a unique grip, I adapt to that.<br> The strength of handmade work is its flexibility\u2014though I can\u2019t mass-produce, I can tailor things.<br> Chopsticks are similar: the ones that feel best differ from person to person.<\/p> \r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/20220914-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Hideyuki Hirabayashi \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\"> \r\n\r\n<h3>Looking Good in the Outdoors<\/h3> \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How do you think about the overall form of your knives?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> Besides function, I think appearance and atmosphere\u2014elements that create a sense of \u201cI want to own this\u201d\u2014are also important.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: There\u2019s certainly a hobby aspect to it.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> Recently, more people enjoy outdoor activities.<br> A friend who likes stream fishing once told me, \u201cA good knife is too precious to drop or lose, so I take a box cutter instead.\u201d<br> Even though he uses really cool clothing and fishing gear (laughs).<br> From what I\u2019ve seen, many outdoor enthusiasts surprisingly pay little attention to knives, so I want to introduce\u2014even in small ways\u2014knives that look cool in my own style.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I understand why some people say your knives are \u201ctoo precious to take outdoors.\u201d Losing one would be heartbreaking (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> It\u2019s flattering, so I don\u2019t know what to say (laughs).<\/p> \r\n\r\n<h3>Bringing Knives Closer to Everyday Life<\/h3> \r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is there anything you\u2019d like to pursue going forward?<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> There are issues I need to overcome, but I\u2019d like to hold workshops someday.<br> Something like parents and children using folding knives together, with the father teaching the child how to handle them.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: When knives are familiar from childhood, like in your case, perspectives really change.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> There\u2019s an elementary school in Nagano where students receive a *Higonokami* knife as an entrance gift. They even keep whetstones at the hallway sinks so kids can maintain the blades themselves.<br> I\u2019d like to do something like that in a workshop.<br> Nowadays, kitchen knives and such are inexpensive, so when they become dull, many people simply replace them\u2014almost like swapping out a cutter blade.<br> If possible, I want people to maintain and care for their knives themselves, and let them grow with use.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: When it comes to blades\u2014especially knives\u2014people tend to focus on the risks.<\/p> \r\n\r\n<p><strong>Hideyuki Hirabayashi:<\/strong> A knife *can* be used with ill intent, and depending on the design, it might even look aggressive. The image is often \u201cthat looks painful.\u201d<br> But I want people to feel, right after that, \u201cbut it\u2019s incredibly useful.\u201d<br> I want them to enjoy having a tool as a
