That aspect hasn\u2019t changed. What has changed recently is that, while our conventional pieces give customers a sense of reassurance, I feel they are also seeking something different from that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_01.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of things do you mean by \u201csomething different\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Something with more concentration\u2026 or rather (laughs), something more condensed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Like a highly crafted one-of-a-kind piece?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Exactly. Apart from our standard tableware, I\u2019m thinking about how to express the artist\u2019s character through one-of-a-kind pieces. I\u2019m in my 30s now, but when I reach my 40s and 50s, I hope to gradually create pieces that symbolize those periods.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What is the key to achieving that \u201chigh concentration\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> I\u2019m also challenging myself to use techniques that weren\u2019t suitable for mass-produced standard tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That must broaden your creative range as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> For painted tableware, I usually use a white base, but I try things like changing colors on the top and bottom, or increasing the number of colors used in the designs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How many colors do you usually use?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Up to seven colors sometimes. That makes it difficult to produce as a standard item.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What forms are common?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Lidded pieces, and recently I\u2019ve started making cup-and-saucer sets. I\u2019m also considering teapots, though I haven\u2019t made them yet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Seeing the Same Things Differently<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So in your mind, you have two directions: standard pieces and high-concentration pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> It\u2019s a different field, but like Toyota\u2014they do motorsports separately from regular cars. Motorsports push the limits, and those innovations eventually feed back into regular cars. I realized one-of-a-kind pottery is similar; pursuing these pieces allows me to apply those elements practically in standard works later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: One-of-a-kind pieces involve taking risks and making bold moves.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Even in painting, the way each surface is used greatly changes the impression. I saw a vase at the Idemitsu Museum\u2019s Hazan Itaya exhibition; the composition and use of space was very inspiring. Since I started painting seriously myself, I notice not only the main design but also the fine edge decorations and details in the blank spaces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Even if the object hasn\u2019t changed, it appears different or shows things previously unseen. You\u2019ve changed yourself, haven\u2019t you?<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Western Tableware Made by Japanese<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You also pay attention to European tableware, but you don\u2019t directly imitate it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> I think of it as \u201cWestern tableware made by Japanese.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you are intentionally conscious of that perspective.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Foreign interpretations of Shino or Oribe are quite different from Japanese creations. They admire old Japanese pottery and express their artistry that way, but I think it\u2019s the other way around. Starting from Western tableware, ideas emerge uniquely from a Japanese perspective.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Mentoring the Next Generation\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You also serve as the leader and manager of your workshop.  Your approach to running the studio feels fresh, and I believe it brings inspiration and hope to the world of tableware and Japanese ceramics.<br>\r\nIt demonstrates a mindset and capability that can motivate young people to consider a career in this field.<br>\r\nNot everyone may agree with your approach, and you likely hear differing opinions\u2014but I respect your choice to continue deliberately despite that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Certainly, given the traditional image of Japanese pottery, people may imagine a humble life in the mountains, occasionally gathering wild herbs\u2026 something like that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I suppose there\u2019s also a preconceived image of that lifestyle.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> That would be fine if I were working alone, but I have staff, and in many ways, the workshop couldn\u2019t function without a proper system.<br>\r\nI had a vague idea of the standard pay in this industry, but I was prompted to reconsider when I heard from a junior who worked part-time as an assistant at another artist\u2019s studio.<br>\r\nApparently, they were earning around 80,000 yen per month and working from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.Well, apparently they got dinner, though.<br>\r\nPeople often say things like, &#8220;The industry must nurture young talent.&#8221; But if the actual employment conditions are like this, it\u2019s very difficult. In modern times, one cannot live on that, and it\u2019s mentally tough as well. I thought, &#8220;We need to change this ourselves.&#8221;<br>\r\nWe first need to provide compensation comparable to other industries. I see this as the minimum starting point, and ultimately, it ties back to nurturing the next generation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Have you felt any results so far?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Of course, it hasn\u2019t been easy, but for now, I feel, &#8220;I\u2019m glad we did this.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n<h3>Cinema and Noodles<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Any interests outside of tableware?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> On Wednesdays, my day off, I usually eat noodles, then go to the cinema. In the evening, the assistants come, and I return to work briefly before finishing. Going to the cinema has been a hobby for a long time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/20221026-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Shintaro Abe \u2013 Artist Interview 2022\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So it\u2019s \u201cgoing to the cinema,\u201d not just \u201cwatching a movie\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Exactly. The experience in a theater is different; at home I might fall asleep\u2014well, even in theaters sometimes (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: No forcing yourself (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> I just sleep if I get sleepy (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Any recent memorable movies?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> A niche horror, \u201cInheritance of the Goddess,\u201d a Thai-Korean collaboration. It was good, and I traveled two hours to see it in Takasaki since it wasn\u2019t shown elsewhere.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And noodles\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know why I like noodles (laughs), but recently I\u2019ve been fascinated by the category itself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Among noodles\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Shintaro Abe:<\/strong> Mostly ramen. For me, ramen is like pottery in crafts, soba is more like woodworking or glass. Ramen can do anything\u2014soy sauce, miso, tonkotsu, hybrids\u2026 Just like ceramics, glazes and forms are endless. Ramen may seem playful to enthusiasts, but it\u2019s fascinating how much can fit into a single bowl.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Thank you for the enjoyable conversation.
