After completing a four-year term at the studio, I apprenticed for two years under Taizo Yasuda, who was also a senior figure there. \r\nAt that time, influenced by him, I was aiming to create fine craft art.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of work were you pursuing specifically?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I made many elaborate pieces, such as decorative vases. At the time, I believed that the more techniques and skills I incorporated, the greater the value would be\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So the total amount of input would directly translate into value\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> Exactly. The more effort you put in, the higher the cost, so naturally the price goes up. But that\u2019s just the creator\u2019s perspective\u2014whether it sells is a different matter. I realized that later (laughs).<br>\r\nIt\u2019s harsh, but the response from people to that kind of work was quite cold. Not only did it not sell, there was hardly any reaction at all. If I had possessed exceptional technical or expressive ability, it might have been different, but I wasn\u2019t at that level (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I\u2019m sure you\u2019re being modest.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I was around 28 or 29\u2014very much a classic \u201chitting the wall\u201d moment. Around that time, someone told me, \u201cWhat matters is whether your own work moves you.\u201d \r\nFor some, that might be obvious, but until then, I had never looked at my work that way. \r\nI was always starting from how others might perceive or evaluate it\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Even before that, you were making what you wanted to make.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I think many of my choices were surface-level\u2014changing textures or making forms slightly unusual to catch attention. But that advice led to the striped series that has since become central to my work. Intuitively, I felt, \u201cThis is good.\u201d The response from customers was also positive. I realized, \u201cSo this is what it means.\u201d What had been overly complex with accumulated techniques suddenly felt open and clear. In a practical sense, that was the real starting point for me as a maker of tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Since then, you\u2019ve steadily progressed as a tableware artist.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> As I continued working this way, I came to want to study the background and history of objects more deeply, and to incorporate those elements into contemporary tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Background and history\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I\u2019ve just about finished reviewing the long history of glassmaking. In a sense, I\u2019m only just beginning (laughs). There\u2019s still so much to learn about tableware and craft.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>From Both Past and Present<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you value when making tableware?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> There are two main aspects. The first is function. Shape, size, and color all serve as supportive elements for food, but this is almost a given when creating tools for use. Moreover, manufacturers invest far greater resources into this than any individual can.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s true.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> The second is expression. These are both functional objects and works in their own right, so through the process of making, I aim to give form to abstract elements within myself. It\u2019s about balancing utility and expression, while also studying history carefully.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you engage with the past as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I see my work as tracing from both past and present to arrive at my own answer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Analyzing Sensation<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How do new works come into being?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> There are many entry points in daily life. For example, my wife, who cooks regularly, might say, \u201cIt would be nice to have something like this.\u201d I also look at older objects, books, or spend time in museums\u2026 But recently, I\u2019ve developed a habit\u2014when I think something is good, I try to analyze why I feel that way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019re in an analytical phase (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> We often talk about \u201csensibility,\u201d but I\u2019ve started to think that its nature can be explained, at least to some extent, logically. For example, \u201cMaybe I think this is beautiful because it resembles a form I\u2019ve seen in historical masterpieces,\u201d or \u201cMaybe I\u2019m influenced by something I was told is exceptional, and I recognize similarities.\u201d I try not to leave things at a purely intuitive level of preference.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: If you don\u2019t consciously strip away what can be explained logically, the truly intuitive aspects\u2014though I believe they do exist\u2014may never clearly reveal themselves.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> One way to answer \u201cwhat is this sensation\u201d is through verbalization, though it can sometimes feel clumsy. But I think that \u201cclumsy verbalization\u201d and that vague sense of \u201cthis is good\u201d are almost equivalent. Perhaps that vague feeling seems better simply because it hasn\u2019t been put into words. In such cases, rather than avoiding it, I think pushing the analysis as far as possible can lead to development. That\u2019s how I see it now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>New Approaches and What Lies Ahead<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019ve also created works with new approaches.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> This deeper, chamfered square plate is a classic form, but for me, it was my first time making it using single-gather glassblowing, so it felt new. It took three months to complete.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What about this scalloped plate?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240213\/20240213-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Koichiro Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> This is also a traditional form, but I feel that forms that have endured over time carry a kind of core or essence as completed tableware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What would you like to pursue going forward?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> I want to create a wide variety of tableware. Until now, my work has been constrained by the techniques I could use, so it remained within a narrow range. I want to explore tableware more deeply and give form to what I want to express through it. In many cases, I had simply decided for myself what was \u201cpossible\u201d or \u201cimpossible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: We look forward to the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Koichiro Mori :<\/strong> Thank you very much. I\u2019d also like to present larger pieces that I don\u2019t usually show, such as vases.
