When I was in elementary school, I would look at the assignments she was working on in college and listen to her talk about them\u2026<br>\r\nAlso, my father worked in architecture, and my mother made and sold stained glass as a hobby, so it felt like a natural progression for me to enter a junior college art program in lifestyle design. \r\nThere, I mainly worked with metal and thought I might become an accessory designer someday.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It sounds like your encounter with glass came later.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> It started when I happened to find a photo book in the school library themed around \u201cmolten glass.\u201d After that, I kept thinking I\u2019d like to see it in person someday, and when I had the chance to try a glassmaking experience, I joined.\u3000Even though I only touched it briefly, I was completely hooked.\u3000After that, I enrolled in classes at that studio and commuted once a week, spending an hour and a half each time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s quite an intense way to get into it (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_01.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> While I was doing that, I had the opportunity to participate in a workshop at a glass studio in Chiba.\u3000Until then, I wasn\u2019t very comfortable going somewhere unfamiliar or doing things on my own, but for that, I felt I could go alone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You must have been very drawn to glass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Well, it was also because none of my friends wanted to come along (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The workshop must have been a great stimulus.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Yes. But there, it was normal for participants to be attending art universities or glass schools\u2014no one was just going once a week like me. That became a turning point, and I started thinking I wanted to pursue glass seriously, so I decided to go to the Toyama Institute of Glass Art.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>What Matters to Me<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: From there, you began working with glass in earnest. What is the appeal of glass for you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> It sparkles. That\u2019s all. For me, that\u2019s exactly what matters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Can you put into words the appeal of glassblowing?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> There are many aspects, but first of all, the process allows you to adjust and correct as you work, and it\u2019s easier to arrive at answers. More than anything, when I\u2019m blowing glass, I enter a state of emptiness\u2014it feels almost like playing a sport. At the institute, I was able to experience various methods of glassmaking, but glassblowing suited my nature best, and it was also the method through which I could create what I truly like.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Something of My Own<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Has your style always been as it is now?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> The simplicity of the construction hasn\u2019t changed. In particular, this series called \u201cHakuu\u201d is something I\u2019ve been making since I was a student.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Your glasswork is simple, yet it subtly conveys the maker\u2019s sensibility. The balance is remarkable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> If I strip things down too much, I feel like I disappear from it. \r\nThat may not actually be the case, but\u2026 I want to add something like a \u201creason\u201d for my presence\u2014or a slight distinctive touch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I think that \u201cdistinctive touch\u201d you mention is what draws me in.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I do want to add \u201csomething.\u201d By doing so, I hope what\u2019s within me can be conveyed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It\u2019s interesting, isn\u2019t it? Not something you\u2019d be troubled without, but something that makes you happy when it\u2019s there\u2026 From the user\u2019s perspective, what might that be?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Perhaps it becomes \u201csomething of your own\u201d\u2026 Even when I make the same item, each one is different, and people choose from among them. Also, when I add that \u201csomething,\u201d I\u2019m thinking only about that particular piece, so each carries its own intention. I personally like choosing works by other artists thinking, \u201cFor me, this one is the one I love.\u201d And I hope using it becomes a \u201chappy moment\u201d for each person.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>I Like Lines<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you value when making your pieces?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> It\u2019s the opposite of him (Koichiro Mori), but I value intuition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s interesting\u2014being in the same place yet valuing completely opposite approaches.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I don\u2019t do things I feel are unnecessary or wrong. For example, I don\u2019t like the center.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The center?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Even when cutting into the glass, I don\u2019t place it in the center.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Indeed, it\u2019s slightly off, asymmetrical. The widths vary subtly as well. Do you try different patterns?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I follow the image I have at that moment, searching for a balance that feels right to me, capturing my intuition at that time and translating it into glass. Simply put, I like lines.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Lines!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Lines cast beautiful shadows. I also like how, when you pour water, they appear to shift or ripple.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Natural Landscapes in Glass<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What inspired this?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I\u2019m imagining the way light flickers in an instant. I draw each line one by one using the same technique as Edo Kiriko cutting. I want people to see not only each individual line but also the whole composition, so I value both the lines and the spaces between them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The spacing between the lines?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> If the spacing is too wide, it can actually feel noisy. I also like when, once food is served, only one side of the lines becomes visible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Yes, plating really enhances it. I also like the textured surface.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I set limits on the extent of the texture. I also try to ensure it doesn\u2019t appear as a pattern. I hope it has a presence similar to something without decoration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: All your works have titles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Yes. I begin with something I want to express, and I want to convey even a part of the image I originally had. \u201cMatataki\u201d suggests a flash\u2026 \u201cHakuu\u201d refers to a sudden shower, but I imagine raindrops trailing down; \u201cYukibare\u201d evokes sunlight hitting accumulated snow after it stops falling. I often draw inspiration from natural landscapes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Favorite Canisters<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: We look forward to the exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> Thank you very much. I\u2019d like to make canisters that we also find useful in our daily life at home.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/20240214\/20240214-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Chieko Mori Interview 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Haven\u2019t you already made canisters?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I\u2019m thinking of making ones with an even simpler structure. At home, we use them for things like jam and shio-koji.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: They must look beautiful as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Chieko Mori :<\/strong> I pay attention to the size of the opening and the lid so that they are easy to take things in and out of, and easy to clean.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I\u2019m looking forward to it!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\"
