But rather than simply wanting to work with wood, I had a stronger desire to create things that could be used for a long time.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_01.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\nOriginally, though, I was interested in design and advertising, so I enrolled in the design department of an art university. However, after entering university, I began to see the abundance of design in the city as something \u201cdisposable.\u201d For example, people replace their smartphones one after another.<br>\r\nFeeling uncomfortable about advertising such products led me toward creating \u201cthings that can be used for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>In Germany<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You also studied abroad in Germany during university. Were you studying design there?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> At the time, I was very interested in photography, so I studied photography.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You were honest about pursuing what you wanted to do (laughs).<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_02.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Still, without knowing German, it was difficult to understand the classes.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  So you went without speaking German? That was brave.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Well, with photography, you can take the pictures yourself, develop them yourself, and create your own photo book.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> At first, he didn\u2019t even have a place to live. \r\nHe went to study abroad but had nowhere to stay (laughs).<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You didn\u2019t secure housing before you left?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> If I could have, I would have (laughs). \r\nBut there were truly no vacancies in Munich, so I stayed in a youth hostel for about three months.<br>\r\nAfter that, I finally found a place and went to view it. \r\nIt was like an attic room, but the old handrail on the staircase was wonderful. \r\nThat gentle feeling unique to wood that has been used for a long time\u2026<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  You couldn\u2019t find a place to live, yet you were delighted by the handrail (laughs). In any case, you were clearly inspired wherever you went.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_03.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Even the wooden church doors had iron fastenings that had rusted beautifully. Such things blended naturally into the scenery.<br>\r\nI often went to flea markets, where even old hangers were for sale. They had developed a rich sheen.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_04.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  And that\u2019s why you make hangers. Most people don\u2019t make them.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> There isn\u2019t much demand (laughs).<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> The first thing I made after becoming independent was a hanger. \r\nHangers in various shapes\u2026 They didn\u2019t sell at all (laughs).<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  (laughs) I\u2019m sorry for laughing. But they\u2019re selling now, aren\u2019t they?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Yes, surprisingly, they are selling now.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> Perhaps it\u2019s good that we simply do what we want to do, regardless of whether it sells or not.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Even when we held exhibitions, it wasn\u2019t as if many customers would come. That situation continued for a long time.<br>\r\nEven so, we were allowed to keep making what we truly wanted to make from the very beginning. \r\nRecently, after speaking with other artists, I finally realized how self-indulgent we had been (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>\u201cKoku -\u67af\u767d-\u201d<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  The name \u201cKoku -\u67af\u767d-\u201d is striking.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> \u201cWither(\u67af)\u201d suggests the beauty that comes with weathering.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> When we looked it up, we found it can also mean \u201cwhat remains after being pared down.\u201d We felt that meaning was close to what we want to express.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> \u201cWhite(\u767d)\u201d can mean \u201cthe beginning of things\u201d or \u201cblank,\u201d which fit well for us.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Planning and the Unplanned<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  For Koku, your collaboration is also an important element.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> I think he is the type who starts with an image or plan and works steadily toward it.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_05.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> I studied design, but Nao studied sculpture, so she has long focused on creating singular works.\u3000I think her strength lies more in creating from a place of emotion and inspiration.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> Perhaps it\u2019s about \u201csomething born out of the unplanned.\u201d \r\nI feel happiest when I encounter something I did not intend, and perhaps I work in order to encounter that. That cannot be planned.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> No, it can\u2019t (laughs).<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_06.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> He asks me, \u201cWhen will that be finished?\u201d And I answer, \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  It\u2019s wonderful how each of your individual qualities is brought together under the name Koku.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_07.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> I think Koku emerges as we come together, without leaning too far toward either of our individual styles. When we talk things through, we eventually arrive at the same conclusion, and that gives us reassurance.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> The other day, I realized she had made something like a small iron bottle. When I asked her about it, she herself wasn\u2019t even sure whether it was a product or not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_08.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>As It Is<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Through your craftsmanship, what is it that you hope to convey?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> We have always wanted to create things that excite us. \r\nAnd we want to share feelings such as \u201cThis is beautiful\u201d or \u201cThis is interesting\u201d with our customers.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> There was also a time when something we created in response to a customer\u2019s words felt as if it had \u201copened a new door\u201d for us.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_09.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Rather than trying to make wood look stylish, we want to show it as it is. Even wood that has turned pale, or begun to decay, or even timber lying around at a lumberyard can look incredibly beautiful to us.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> Sometimes simply bringing focus to something is enough in itself, and perhaps we enjoy that. If we feel it is beautiful as it is, then it doesn\u2019t need our intervention.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Bringing the Forest Indoors<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  The range of things you create is broad. \r\nYou make cutting boards, hangers, and furniture.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> From the beginning, we wanted to create all the everyday items around us through our own perspective.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  And then you even built your own house. \r\nIt seems that new ideas might emerge from that as well.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_10.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> We think about what kind of furniture we would want to use in this house.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Was there a particular theme behind the design of this house?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Perhaps it is about feeling nature directly. In the past, houses were built entirely from natural materials, almost as if people were living as an extension of the forest.<br>\r\nPeople can feel healed and healthier when they are in nature. We wanted to move closer to that again.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> This house also has an experimental aspect.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> For example, using whole logs like that is not something you would normally do in a standard house. It feels as if we have brought the forest directly indoors.<br>\r\nThe exterior walls are left unpainted. Many people told us we should not leave them untreated, but we met an architect who said it would be fine, and so we were able to realize it.<br>\r\nThe window frames are also unpainted, so we will see how they withstand the rain. They are probably fine, but the answer will come with time.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/20240423-1_11.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Koku Takaaki Inui, Naomi Inui 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Naomi Inui:<\/strong> We say, \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t work, we\u2019ll fix it\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  What would you like to pursue from here on?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> Last year, with the relocation, we were thinking almost entirely about architecture. Now, the stage is finally set again for making things.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada:  Perhaps it was good to step away for about a year.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Takaaki Inui:<\/strong> It felt like being in the \u201cHyperbolic Time Chamber\u201d from Dragon Ball (laughs).
