I didn\u2019t want to make excuses either.<br>\r\n\u201cSo if it\u2019s a job I choose because I love it\u2026\u201d\u2014that was the answer I reached at the time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_01.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What were you interested in at that time?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Vintage clothing.<br>\r\nAt the time, Levi\u2019s 501XX and the like were very popular.<br>\r\nA classmate from middle school already had a shop in Amerika-mura (Osaka), so I decided to work there.<br>\r\nI enjoyed customer service itself, but the evaluations were not about style\u2014they were purely about whether the item was old.<br>\r\nEven if jeans were oversized or too tight, people would value them just because they were from \u201cthe WWII model,\u201d and boots were the same\u2026 everyone looked like Mickey Mouse because the sizes were huge. I kept thinking, \u201cThis is definitely weird.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> One day, while thinking about my future alone in my room, my eyes landed on a large glass bowl full of marbles I used to collect in elementary school.<br>\r\nEven though I had left almost everything at my parents\u2019 house when living alone, for some reason I had brought only that with me\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Those things tend to catch your eye at moments like that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Just at the Level of \u201cI Like Glass\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> After that, all I could imagine was myself blowing glass (laughs).<br>\r\nAt the library, I found a thick encyclopedia-like book that had \u201cEdo Kiriko,\u201d \u201cSatsuma Kiriko,\u201d and \u201cHizen Vidro.\u201d<br>\r\nI heard Satsuma Kiriko only accepted local people, so next I contacted Hizen Vidro in Saga, and they said, \u201cCome anytime.\u201d<br>\r\nSo I thought, \u201cSaga is okay then!\u201d and the next day I called again saying, \u201cI got a Shinkansen ticket, so I\u2019ll come tomorrow.\u201d Then they were like, \u201cWhere on earth are you coming from?\u201d<br>\r\nApparently they had misheard Shiga as Saga. When I said, \u201cI\u2019m from Shiga,\u201d they replied, \u201cWe only take people from Saga.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Then I called what I thought was Edo Kiriko, but it turned out to be some glass-related association, and the conversation kept going nowhere.<br>\r\nThey asked, \u201cWhat do you want to do in glass?\u201d but since I knew nothing, all I could say was, \u201cWell\u2026 something with glass,\u201d so they probably thought I was an idiot.<br>\r\nEventually, they introduced me to a glass factory in Tokyo.<br>\r\nWhen I arrived, it was a huge factory.<br>\r\nThe president looked at the workers and said, \u201cThese guys rotate from time to time. Some just disappear, but the total number stays the same, so it\u2019s fine.\u201d<br>\r\nThey told me to live in the dorm with those \u201crotating\u201d people, which scared me, so I desperately searched for the next place and found a factory in Osaka.<br>\r\nAt that point, it wasn\u2019t even about \u201cliking glass\u201d\u2014I just wanted a place where I wouldn\u2019t have to quit (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_02.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>So Many Shocking People<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: How was the Osaka factory?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> When I went for the interview, there were a bunch of intimidating people, but when I returned a week later for my first day of work, all of them were gone.<br>\r\nThe president said, \u201cBusiness is bad, so I fired all of them first.\u201d<br>\r\nThey were skilled but unbelievable people.<br>\r\nOne said, \u201cMy wife left for the public bath three years ago and hasn\u2019t come back.\u201d<br>\r\nAnd since glass factories use heat, they usually have a big bath, but in the changing room, someone was living there (laughs).<br>\r\nThose guys\u2014Mr. Matsuda and someone named Higashi something\u2014would take me drinking on Saturday nights.<br>\r\nEven though they looked shabby at the factory, they suddenly looked cool with neatly parted hair when going out.<br>\r\nBut at the bar, they used different names (laughs).<br>\r\nAnd they\u2019d get angry: \u201cDon\u2019t call me Matsuda.\u201d<br>\r\nIt was my first time meeting someone living under an alias.<br>\r\nLet me tell you the craziest story of them all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: There\u2019s an even crazier one?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> There was a quiet, skilled craftsman who used to polish crystal in Yamanashi. Compared to that, polishing glass was very easy for him.<br>\r\nHe was a thin old man and a twin. The older twin was more skilled but alcoholic\u2026 so he came and went inconsistently.<br>\r\nWhen he didn\u2019t show up, we had to go call him at home. One day, no matter how many times we called him, he wouldn\u2019t wake up, so the president got irritated and said, \u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d<br>\r\nThen the president didn\u2019t come back either.<br>\r\nIn the evening he returned angrily, saying, \u201cHe was dead. And at the busiest time!\u201d<br>\r\nBack then I thought, \u201cSomeone just died and that\u2019s what you say\u2026?\u201d but now I feel\u2014though it may sound inappropriate\u2014that I witnessed something fundamental about \u201cliving.\u201d It was a tough but real world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_03.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Easy to Say, Hard to Do<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Even with everything, it was a job you chose because you loved it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Exactly. That\u2019s why I could endure it.<br>\r\nAt lectures for young people, they often say, \u201cFirst, find what you love.\u201d<br>\r\nIt\u2019s easy to say but the hardest thing to do. But that\u2019s exactly where I started.<br>\r\nIt took time at first, but I was fortunate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: It must have been difficult at the beginning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> It was tough.<br>\r\nI couldn\u2019t do anything, so while walking the factory dog or making deliveries, I\u2019d see people my age, clearly new office workers, walking in suits looking lively.<br>\r\nEven though I had chosen not to wear a suit, I envied them terribly.<br>\r\nAnd then I hated myself for feeling that way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Story of the Ponte<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> The Osaka factory\u2019s business declined after the bubble burst, so I began looking for a glass studio.<br>\r\nEvery time I called, they\u2019d ask, \u201cCan you do ponte?\u201d<br>\r\nBut the factory I\u2019d been in used molds, so there was no need for ponte, meaning I had no idea what it was.<br>\r\nWhen I answered, \u201cNo,\u201d they\u2019d reject me on the spot.<br>\r\nSo I thought, \u201cApparently ponte is important,\u201d and started saying, \u201cSometimes I can, sometimes I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> There\u2019s absolutely no such thing as sometimes being able to do ponte and sometimes not (laughs).<br>\r\nThey probably thought I was even more of an idiot.<br>\r\nEventually, while making a custom piece by chance, someone said, \u201cThis is ponte.\u201d<br>\r\nAnd I thought, \u201cAh, so this is the famous ponte\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_04.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So you could finally pass the phone interviews.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Sometime later, I called Mr. Kuniaki Kuroki\u2019s studio.<br>\r\n\u201cI\u2019m working at a small factory now. I can do ponte,\u201d I said.<br>\r\nMr. Kuroki himself had worked his way up from factories and was looking for someone like that, so I fit perfectly.<br>\r\nHe said, \u201cCome visit.\u201d I practiced ponte desperately, thinking he\u2019d make me do it.<br>\r\nWhen I arrived, he said, \u201cLet\u2019s go eat,\u201d and despite not being able to drink alcohol, I kept thinking, \u201cWhen is he going to make me do ponte?\u201d<br>\r\nIn the end, he just said, \u201cYou should get going to catch your flight,\u201d and I thought, \u201cWait, there was no ponte!\u201d (laughs).After organizing things, I quit the Osaka factory.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: The president must have been sad.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> He said, \u201cYou\u2019re quitting? At the busiest time!?\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>A New Environment<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You began working under Mr. Kuroki in a completely different environment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> I wanted to blow glass, but three others were ahead of me. Still, I thought, \u201cI will not lose.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Because you had survived tough environments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Yes. So whenever Mr. Kuroki said, \u201cWant to try this?\u201d others hesitated, but I felt grateful for any chance and raised my hand immediately, even on days off.<br>\r\nEventually, after about six months, I was allowed to blow glass.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Your attitude toward work was recognized.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> I enjoyed it. I always thought, \u201cThere is something I want to do here.\u201d<br>\r\nOn days off, I could practice, and Mr. Kuroki always acknowledged what we did.<br>\r\nI once dreamed of becoming his right-hand or foreman, but when I thought about the future I wanted, I knew I needed to work under my own name someday.<br>\r\nSo I consulted him and decided to move to Toyama Glass Studio.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: How long were you with Mr. Kuroki?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Fourteen years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_05.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<h3>To Toyama<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: And again, Toyama was a new environment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> I had pride in having worked under Mr. Kuroki, and his pieces\u2014even expensive vases\u2014sold one after another.<br>\r\nHis fans also praised us apprentices, so it was easy to get the wrong idea.<br>\r\nI knew I shouldn\u2019t let that happen, but I probably had already become that way.<br>\r\nWhen I tried making my own pieces, they turned out like copies of his, and when I forced myself to change them, they were just\u2026 strange.<br>\r\nAt the studio\u2019s newcomer exhibition, I was excited to \u201cmake whatever I liked,\u201d but my peers\u2019 works were clearly more appealing. I deeply realized that technique alone wasn\u2019t enough.<br>\r\nTwo years later, during a glass studio exhibition at a Tokyo department store, you stopped by.<br>\r\nBut you asked, \u201cCan you introduce me to another artist?\u201d and left.<br>\r\nI thought, \u201cWhat, not me?\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: My apologies (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> No, it helped me understand exactly where I stood, and I appreciated the honesty.<br>\r\nA year later, at my solo exhibition, you came again. And now here we are.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: It has been ten years since then.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>Enjoyable and Careful<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What are the fundamentals you value in making things?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Tableware should follow standard proportions.<br>\r\nFor cups, I decide what drink they are meant for, and then design accordingly.<br>\r\nAlso: \u201cenjoyably\u201d and \u201ccarefully.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_06.jpg\" alt=\"\u5e02\u5ddd\u77e5\u4e5f\u3055\u3093\u4f5c\u8005\u30a4\u30f3\u30bf\u30d3\u30e5\u30fc2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What do you mean by \u201cenjoyably\u201d?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Feeling genuinely excited about what I\u2019m making, recalling conversations with customers\u2014things like that.<br>\r\nBeing \u201ccareful\u201d is easy if you\u2019re mindful. But \u201cenjoyable\u201d is harder.<br>\r\nI finally feel I\u2019ve reached a stage where I can think about such things.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Anything technical you think about?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> Technically, these methods have existed since the ancient civilizations. They haven\u2019t changed dramatically.<br>\r\nEven if I try something new, most of the time I find it already existed. It\u2019s incredible.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3>The Sun Series<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Among the works you\u2019ve made, which hold special meaning?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> The Sun Series. After becoming independent, I wanted to create everyday glassware. Even if I removed decoration, I needed a core element, so I made this series.<br>\r\nWhen I looked inside after finishing one, it sparkled so brilliantly that I thought, \u201cWow, this is amazing!\u201d<br>\r\nAnd people who saw them felt the same way.<br>\r\nFeeling that my sense connected with others gave me fulfillment, and I finally felt I had made something I could call my own work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/20240814_07.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Tomoya Ichikawa 2024\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: We look forward to your two-person exhibition with Haruya Abe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tomoya Ichikawa:<\/strong> I\u2019m considering making 7- and 8-sun plates that would work beautifully with cold noodles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: I look forward to seeing them at the exhibition.
