And for the record, it\u2019s also my 30th wedding anniversary\u2014both on the same day, April 2.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_01.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Congratulations. What an incredible coincidence. When you first became independent, did you have even the slightest idea that things would turn out as they have now\u2026? No, probably not.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I nearly went under right after going independent. When I came to Miyazaki, I had no money, no credibility. A bank employee told me, \u201cWe won\u2019t lend you even a single yen.\u201d I relied on a local pottery studio for a while\u2026 I\u2019m still grateful to them.<br>\r\nEventually, I forced myself into independence anyway. Even though I had plenty of time but no clients lined up, I kept producing at the same pace as when I worked at the kiln\u2014800 to 900 pieces a day. But my inventory kept increasing, my kids kept growing\u2026 I thought, \u201cThis is bad\u2026\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Hints from Many Sources<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What kind of things did you make at the beginning?<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Kohiki ware.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_02.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Later, inspired by what I learned during my time at a Seto pottery studio, I started shaping those ideas in my own way. From there, I started making small ochazuke bowls and other items at the request of shops.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_03.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Ochazuke bowls\u2014those sound wonderful.<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I paid close attention to the height and the angle of the bowl\u2019s rise.<br>\r\nIf you get those wrong, the bowl becomes incredibly hard to use (laughs).<br>\r\nA food company even used them in a TV commercial.<br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That must have introduced your work to many people.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_04.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I also worked on simple pieces with little decoration. \r\nAnd here in Kobayashi City, the cultural sphere is close to Satsuma, so I wondered if I could use Satsuma-style ivory glaze for something. But calling it actually \u201cSatsuma ware\u201d would be disrespectful to the original, so I changed the name (laughs).<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_05.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> From there, I began adding lines, carving patterns, increasing colors.<br>\r\nI also experimented with expressions reminiscent of Kiseto or Oribe, but calling them by those names directly would upset the people who are doing the real thing. So I changed the names and added my own arrangements.<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>The Birth of Carving Work<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Even though you aimed for simplicity, you ended up adding more and more decoration, which eventually led to your carved work.<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_06.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Around that time, at an exhibition, I was playing with a customer\u2019s child who had brought a kaleidoscope.<br>\r\nWhen I looked through it, I was amazed that infinite patterns could emerge from so few pieces. I realized my carving tools were the same.<br>\r\nEven with just a few chisels, combining them expands the range of expression.<br>\r\nBy adjusting carving depth and glaze, the process became closer to \u201cpainting with carving.\u201d<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_07.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So many discoveries layered together.<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Another reason I started carving was that \u201cpainting with a brush\u201d never quite fit me.<br>\r\nOriginally, I studied sometsuke at the training school in Seto, and thought I could handle it.<br>\r\nI started teaching my wife, who helps me, acting all high and mighty\u2014but she had a better instinct for it, and within six months she surpassed me.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs)\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> So \u201cdrawing through carving\u201d felt like a path opening up. I remembered my grandfather\u2019s woodcarving work and thought, \u201cI want to do something like that.\u201d I practiced and ended up where I am today.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_08.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Recent Work<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Are there things you\u2019ve been thinking about or working on recently?<br>\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> With all the natural disasters and accidents lately, I\u2019ve been exploring motifs that might serve as charms or talismans.<br>\r\nFor example, the Four Symbols\u2014Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise.<br>\r\nTo avoid making them too realistic, I turned the Azure Dragon\u2019s scales, the Vermilion Bird\u2019s decorative feathers, and the Black Tortoise\u2019s snake into continuous patterns\u2026 But the White Tiger gave me the most trouble\u2014because, well, it\u2019s white. Even when I tried to stylize it, it somehow ended up looking like \u201can old veteran who\u2019s lost his edge\u201d (laughs).\u3000I\u2019ll refine it more.<br>\r\nAlso, I\u2019ve been increasingly using nearby things as motifs.\u3000In winter, Daurian redstarts often visit the garden\u2014they\u2019re adorable\u2014so I used them too.\u3000I also want to show something like the breath of craftsmanship, reminiscent of my grandfather\u2019s woodworking\u2014like the marks left by a chisel.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_09.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Was there a particular trigger for these changes?\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Maybe it\u2019s age\u2026 Also, people like Mr. Fujitsuka (artist Mitsuo Fujitsuka) retiring, or my children becoming independent\u2026 A lot of sad changes overlapped.<br>\r\nAnd only recently have I finally started writing ideas down in a notebook.<br>\r\n \r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_10.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Until now\u2026?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I used to think it was better *not* to have an idea notebook.<br>\r\nI\u2019m bad at copying classical designs or following examples. Even when I played in a band, I didn\u2019t like being in a cover band\u2014you\u2019d always be compared to the original: \u201cgood,\u201d \u201cbad,\u201d \u201cwrong\u201d\u2026 So I figured it was faster to just write our own songs. That way, there were no \u201cmistakes.\u201d I\u2019d say things like, \u201cThis is just a slightly unusual chord progression.\u201d<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs)\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> So having an idea notebook felt like having a \u201cmodel\u201d that would limit how far I could go.<br>\r\nBut recently, even ideas I was sure I had vanish when it\u2019s time to create. And while my ideas used to be relatively simple, lately they\u2019ve gotten more complex, and I can\u2019t organize them in my head anymore (laughs).<br>\r\nSo when I was looking for a notebook, I found one in my son\u2019s room\u2014a perfect blank one. When I opened it, only the first page had notes, the rest were blank. It was so like him that I had to laugh.<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: He probably never imagined his notebook would be used for that purpose.<br>\r\n \r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_11.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<h3>Through Objects\u2026<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Is there anything you hope to work on going forward?<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I want to make things that people\u2014regardless of generation\u2014who aren\u2019t familiar with tableware can \u201ctry taking home.\u201d<br>\r\nAt an exhibition once, a customer told her husband, who had just tagged along, \u201cIt\u2019s fun when your tableware changes,\u201d and it really struck me. I hope I can convey that kind of joy through my work.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_12.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You really love \u201cfun,\u201d don\u2019t you. And you always talk about anything\u2014any episode\u2014with such joy.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> For example, even with the openwork pieces I was making at the time\u2014if I said carving them wasn\u2019t physically hard, that\u2019d probably be a lie. But if I let myself think or say \u201cit\u2019s painful,\u201d then that\u2019s the end of it, isn\u2019t it?<br>\r\nIt would make even the people who choose to use those pieces feel burdened.<br>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/202506017_13.jpg\" alt=\"Tokuhuro Masubuchi Interview 2025\">\r\n\r\n<h3>From Here On<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: For 20 years since independence, your wife has always been by your side.<br>\r\n<p><strong>Wife:<\/strong> As the children grow, various things happen, don\u2019t they? Even in all that, he always thinks about the family and really does his best.<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> No, you can tell the truth. Just say it normally (laughs).<br>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\">Wife: That *is* the truth\u2026<br>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> My wife is a person of great patience. It may sound strange coming from me, but she really puts up with a lot. I\u2019ve gotten this far simply because I love pottery\u2014nothing more than that, really.
