He worked in human resources at a large company, but his hobby was DIY, especially making speakers. Watching him and working together with him made me vaguely start thinking about making things in the future.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That sounds like a wonderful experience. Did you listen to music together on the speakers he built?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> Our taste in music was completely different. Back then, I was listening to pop music like Seiko Matsuda (laughs). Recently, though, my tastes have become quite similar to his. I find myself listening to jazz and classical music now. As I grow older, I&#8217;ve come to enjoy the music I didn&#8217;t care for back then.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_01.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\t\r\n<h3>From Automobiles to Woodworking<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Where did you study woodworking?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> After graduating from graduate school with a degree in mechanical engineering, I worked for Honda, the car manufacturer, for three years. After leaving the company, I studied at the Agematsu Technical Specialized School in Nagano Prefecture.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How did you find your time at the company?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I enjoyed coming up with ideas, drawing blueprints, and actually building things. However, I also realized that I wasn&#8217;t suited for working in a large organization. In a big company, internal preparation and coordination are considered very important. I spent more time preparing materials for meetings and attending discussions than actually designing and making things, which was different from what I had imagined.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How was the technical school?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> It was incredibly fun. Going back to school after spending time in the workforce is truly an enjoyable experience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You appreciate it in a completely different way (laughs).<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_02.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\t\r\n\t\r\n<h3>On the Path to Independence<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What did you do after graduating from the technical school?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I joined a woodworking company. The company itself was based in Tokyo, but an elderly craftsman was making all their products by hand here in Kiso Town. I stayed in Kiso after school to assist him. It was a fascinating experience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That worked out wonderfully for you.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> He was very friendly. He was already nearly 80 years old at the time and had told the company that he wanted to retire.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It sounds like a great opportunity to learn.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> At the technical school, the focus was on making one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, but from him, I learned how to produce items in quantity and the mindset behind it. The way he managed time and used machinery was completely different. The foundation of everything was about how quickly and accurately you could make things.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_03.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\t\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Did you get off to a smooth start?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> He told me, &#8220;You can handle this better than I expected.&#8221; Since I have a large build, I think I look like someone who isn&#8217;t good with detailed work (laughs). After about two years, he retired, which gave me the opportunity to start my own business. I was just over 30 at the time.<\/p>\r\n\t\r\n<h3>From Furniture to Tableware and Cutlery<\/h3>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: How did you begin your career as an independent maker?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I started out focusing mainly on custom-made furniture. Eventually, I began using the offcuts from making furniture to create tableware like plates, spoons, and forks.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_04.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\t\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Was your style already established back then?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> When I started my own business, simple designs seemed to be popular, but I wanted to make things that also featured decorative elements. I began by exploring many different shapes, selecting the ones I liked, and refining them over and over. That process has brought me to where I am today.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_05.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n\t\r\n<h3>What I Pursue Every Day<\/h3>\t\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is there anything you value most when making your work?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> At first, I tried to make identical items perfectly uniform. While making the exact same shape repeatedly improves your technique, I feel it also takes away the opportunity for the shape itself to evolve. If there is something people look for in my work, I believe it is not about deciding on a single &#8220;correct&#8221; shape and mass-producing it, but about pursuing what feels right to me each day.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Watching those subtle changes over time is one of the joys of following a maker&#8217;s work.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_06.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\t\r\n\t\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I also try not to put my creative process into words too much. When you express things in words or numbers, you can easily become restricted by them. When you make things within a large organization, like I used to, verbalizing and quantifying everything is necessary. But when you handle the entire process by yourself, I think it is better not to. When I find something beautiful, I think about the reason behind it, but I try to keep an open mind and embrace constant evolution. Right now, &#8220;change&#8221; is my main theme.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Because you spent years chasing numbers, you understand the true value of not doing so.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> Numbers are easy to understand, but what matters more is the reasoning behind them. That might just be my background in science and engineering speaking.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you prepare blueprints when making cutlery?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I do draw rough sketches for some parts, especially for the tips, and I sometimes make templates. However, I try not to let myself be bound by them. If a better shape comes to mind while I am working, I prioritize that. Wood varies greatly from piece to piece, so I prefer to let the shape follow the unique characteristics of the material.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Making cutlery seems incredibly challenging. If it is only beautiful, people won&#8217;t keep using it, but if it is only functional, people won&#8217;t choose it in the first place.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> Since I am creating everyday utensils, I make sure they function properly as tools. Strength, comfort in the hand, and various other practical elements must meet a certain standard, and I hope to find a beautiful balance among them.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_07.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\t\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You studied mechanical engineering, worked in automotive manufacturing, made everyday household items under a master craftsman, and now you create lifestyle objects independently.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> Although each experience was different, the core act of making things remains the same. The techniques and mindsets I gained from each period are all alive within my current work.<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09-03\/20250924_08.jpg\" alt=\"Interview with Woodworker Jungo Suzuki 2025\">\r\n<br>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you have any plans or ideas for the future?<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Jungo Suzuki :<\/strong> I would like to try making objects that have no specific practical use. Because of my engineering background, I have only ever made functional items. I sometimes worry that I might not know what to create once that practical guideline is removed, but I want to take on the challenge. I also hope to make larger pieces like furniture again.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: We look forward to seeing them.
