At first glance, his creations may seem simple, but each piece is a masterpiece filled with thoughtful details and deep passion. We look forward to seeing what kind of unique pieces he will bring us this May.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What first inspired you to start working with brass?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Originally, I was doing sculpture, but over time I found myself moving toward making tableware. I wanted to create things that are more closely connected to everyday life. That being said, to me, making a sculpture and making a spoon are essentially the same. For instance, finding the right balance between the torso and the legs in a human sculpture requires the exact same sense of proportion as balancing the bowl and the handle of a spoon. They both spark the exact same creative curiosity within me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Your pieces always look so natural. I suppose that comes from your sense of balance. Having the artistic intuition to see a sculpture and a spoon in the same way is remarkable. They are indeed wonderful to use.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Form and shape are very important. But looking at it from a more fundamental level, the most important thing for my work is having a genuine sense of &#8220;living a real life.&#8221; No matter how beautiful an object is, it is meaningless if it feels disconnected from who I am. It only becomes meaningful once it truly feels right to me. So, whether it is a spoon or a sculpture, the ultimate goal in making it remains the same. After all, you can only create within the boundaries of your own life experience. It all comes down to yourself. If that is the case, I feel there is nothing more essential than enriching one&#8217;s own daily life. Everyday life is vital; it is the absolute starting point of my craftsmanship.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So your foundation is everyday life. You infuse both functionality and the warmth of handcrafting into each piece. And that is how this seemingly ordinary spoon comes to be. Whether it is a serving spoon, a fork, or a tea scoop, the more you look at them and use them, the more you appreciate the rich qualities embedded within them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Hearing you say that makes me a bit bashful, but the process of hammering brass is surprisingly profound. The striking sound has a certain clarity to it, and you can instantly tell the difference between a strike that hits the absolute center and one that does not. It feels like a breakthrough moment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: A breakthrough moment. Spending time in your studio and watching you work makes me feel like I understand what you mean.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> I don&#8217;t experience it much now, but when I first started working with brass, there were times when I just couldn&#8217;t achieve that breakthrough feeling. It is a terrible feeling, honestly (laughs). Whenever that happened, the finished pieces were never any good (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: A brass item starts out as a simple flat sheet or a bar, and from there it is transformed into a functional piece. I noticed something special when I watched you work the other day. Before seeing your process, I had blindly assumed that the sheet or bar would gradually turn into its final shape. But it wasn&#8217;t like that at all. There is a precise moment where the material suddenly transforms into a completed piece. In the blink of an eye, it just happens.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Exactly. It is hard to put into words, but it happens just like that. This rewarding moment is exactly why I could never quit this job (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: To change the subject slightly, did you alter the design of the butter knives you delivered recently?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Yes, I made the tip flat. It should now feel more visually balanced and be much easier to use. Just because I made a shape once doesn&#8217;t mean I have to stick with it forever. If a change makes it better, then that is the right direction to go.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: It is exciting to see how your work evolves. Now, for the May exhibition themed &#8220;My Work, My Pieces,&#8221; you are creating a pitcher for the very first time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> I have wanted to make one for a long time, but it took a while to overcome the technical challenges.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What were those challenges exactly?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Since it is a pitcher, it first needs a spout that pours beautifully without dripping. It also requires a reliable water-resistant treatment, because brass on its own does not handle moisture well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: This one pours beautifully without any drips at all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Yes. It took a lot of effort because shaping a pouring spout with less resilient metals\u2014especially with sheet metal metalworking\u2014is quite difficult. However, the balance between functionality and form has finally reached a satisfying standard. A smooth, clean pour is absolutely essential for a pitcher.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Speaking of water resistance, you have mentioned your idea of baking lacquer onto the surface for a long time, haven&#8217;t you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Yes, for a very long time (laughs). It was a difficult process to perfect, but it was absolutely necessary for brass to overcome its vulnerability to moisture.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: I am delighted that you managed to achieve this long-standing goal just in time for the May exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Thank you. Refining the pouring spout and perfecting the baked-lacquer finish marks a significant milestone for me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Achieving those two breakthroughs led to the creation of the &#8220;Three Pitcher Brothers.&#8221; When you sent over the samples, you had written &#8220;Three Pitcher Brothers&#8221; on the note. It brought a smile to my face because the name perfectly captures their charming character.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> The eldest brother has quite a bold presence (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: In any case, I am truly glad everything came together beautifully for the May exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Kiyoshi Haraguchi :<\/strong> Me too.
