What about the potter\u2019s wheel?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I bought a manual wheel myself. But at the time, I had no money, and I didn\u2019t want to buy an electric wheel.  \r\nSo I went to a \u201cone-day pottery experience\u201d class, where you can try an electric wheel for a low price.  \r\nIt was only about two hours.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That\u2019s bold (laughs). A trial class\u2026 doesn\u2019t sound like the plan of someone planning to make a living from pottery.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> After that, I spent a year studying on my own.  \r\nIt was full of trial and error, and yes, it was lonely and stressful.  \r\nBoth my mental and physical energy were pushed to the limit, so it was tough.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The answer you arrived at then is your current style, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> From the beginning, I wanted to make casual tableware that balanced strength and warmth.  \r\nI never wavered in that intention.  \r\nI spent a year exploring methods to realize it.  \r\nLooking back, it was a valuable time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And then you visited Hanada with your samples. That was six years ago.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> When I got orders, I thought, \u201cYes, what I\u2019ve been doing isn\u2019t wrong.\u201d  \r\nIt was truly gratifying.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019re a precious presence for Hanada too.  \r\nYour tableware has a unique atmosphere.  \r\nWhether it\u2019s Oribe, iron glaze, or this silver finish, each has a distinct charm.  \r\nIt\u2019s the allure of handmade work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Yes.  \r\nSince I created them independently, the effort I put in made them something only I could do.  \r\nSo I don\u2019t compare my work to others\u2019 tableware, nor could I (laughs).  \r\nOf course, there are many who are more skilled than me, so seeing their work is always instructive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Your tableware is original, but not difficult to use.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> My basic principle is that you can imagine the dish just by looking at the tableware.  \r\nAnd it has to be something I want to use myself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I see. Your tableware\u2019s uses expand naturally once you start using it.  \r\nIt\u2019s easy to plate dishes, and you notice all the functional considerations like ease of holding.  \r\nI hear you put a lot of thought into the plate for the May exhibition too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Exactly. It can be used reversibly and is easy to hold.  \r\nWhen planning tableware, I imagine as if I were the chef (laughs).  \r\nThe food is the star.  \r\nWhen the table looks lively and enjoyable, it feels like life itself becomes richer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: If I say too much, it might lessen its value, but the strength and warmth of your work comes from the effort coil-building requires, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Not because someone told me, but in terms of time, it takes more than five times as long as wheel forming.  \r\nFor this silver finish (tried for the May exhibition), I sand each piece individually.  \r\nBut I cannot rely on the effort alone.  \r\nUltimately, it\u2019s about whether the finished piece is good or not.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What is this collection\u2019s theme?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> \u201cSpecial Meals.\u201d  \r\nActually, since I got the exhibition offer, I\u2019ve imagined it very concretely.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do you mean?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> This platter for flounder marinated in kelp, the Oribe plate for simmered scorpionfish, the Oribe long rectangular plate for mackerel sushi, the square bowl for white fish cake, the free cup for brown sugar shochu.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Very specific (laughs). Your \u201ctableware made for yourself\u201d is literally \u201ctableware you want to use yourself.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> Exactly. Always, but especially this time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Seeing the samples makes me look forward to using them.  \r\nThis platter would make pickles look beautiful if you reversed it.  \r\nBy the way\u2026 this free cup shows you really love drinking, don\u2019t you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Manabu Yoshida:<\/strong> I do (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br>\r\n
