It was very enjoyable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: So you grew up surrounded by banquets and vessels (laughs). And then you began making pottery?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Yes, I grew fond of the vessels I was familiar with.<br>\r\nNot just the objects themselves, but the people around them, the sake brewers,<br>the food, the atmosphere of the house\u2014everything together.<br>\r\nFor me, the vessels were at the center of it all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: And then you joined Kutani Seiy\u014d Kiln.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> After graduating school, I attended a pottery school in Seto, worked at Kutani Seiy\u014d Kiln, and then went to Tobe.<br>\r\nI was at Kutani Seiy\u014d Kiln for about six or seven years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: I heard you chose Tobe because of the clay.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> I considered working in Kure, where my roots are,<br>\r\nbut I confirmed that Tobe had the clay suitable for making the vessels I aimed for.<br>\r\nAlthough Tobe is known for thick pottery, the clay can also be thrown thin.<br>\r\nThe glaze melts in the kiln, so I adjusted it carefully to get the current color.<br>\r\nI wanted to achieve a smooth, rich feel. When I asked a local clay supplier if there was a place in Tobe,he introduced me to Hirotamura village, which is where my workshop is now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: Had you been to Tobe before?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> I had passed through, but I didn\u2019t know it well.<br>\r\nI only had the impression that Tobe made thick pottery.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: And then, in Tobe, you settled on the style of white porcelain.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> After leaving Kutani Seiy\u014d Kiln, I spent some time experimenting.<br>\r\nI kept thinking: What is it I truly want to do? What suits me best?<br>\r\nWhat had I admired since I started making pottery?<br>\r\nI tried many things over two or three years.<br>\r\nThen I realized that the medium through which I could bring the most joy to people was white porcelain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: White porcelain fits you best, then.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> I love \u201cform.\u201d I don\u2019t know why, but I\u2019ve always loved form (laughs).<br>\r\nSince my student days, I went around Tokyo looking at all sorts of shapes.<br>\r\nEspecially the forms of vessels from the Korean Joseon dynasty or Northern Song dynasty.\r\n<br>\r\nIn this context, I came to think that white porcelain was the most suitable medium to express the forms I loved.<br>\r\nBy looking at old pieces, you can clearly see what you lack\u2014not only in technique but also in sensitivity.<br>\r\nMaking vessels is not just about skill; it\u2019s about enhancing your technique to achieve the desired form.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: In white porcelain, \u201cform\u201d is extremely important, you think.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Of course. There\u2019s no painting, and it\u2019s not really about enjoying surface \u201ctaste.\u201d<br>\r\nIt\u2019s not only about the form itself, but where you base it matters.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: It\u2019s about learning from tradition. As you look at and handle old pieces, various insights gradually accumulate within you.\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> In terms of accumulation, food is similar for me.<br>\r\nIf you eat well-prepared food regularly, you can tell when something tastes off.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s the same with vessels. It\u2019s not about logic.<br>\r\nSomething is delicious because it is delicious. Conversely, it\u2019s bad because it is bad.<br>\r\nLater, you may need reasoning to explain it, but first, it\u2019s important to judge intuitively.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: Too much reasoning would make work less enjoyable, right?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Exactly. I\u2019m especially moved by simple, undecorated plates. They\u2019re amazing.<br>\r\nA simple, ordinary vessel that captures people\u2019s hearts must have a very strong core.<br>\r\nIf the essence is lacking, people tend to decorate excessively to compensate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: That pewter plate was also very popular. It\u2019s simple too.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> That\u2019s the challenge. Once you get used to it, it actually becomes harder.By seeing the essence of form, the level you aim for rises.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: That\u2019s a welcome challenge.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Every piece of pottery is a test.<br>\r\nOnce it comes out of the kiln, it either works or it doesn\u2019t.<br>\r\nYou can\u2019t dwell on past failures, and just because something succeeded before doesn\u2019t guarantee the next attempt will.<br>\r\nEvery time, it\u2019s about whether it can bring joy to people.<br>\r\nAlthough many pieces are made continuously, each one is sent as a finished product.<br>\r\nEach piece must provide enjoyment. That\u2019s all.<br>\r\nThere may be a \u201cnext,\u201d but in the moment, there really isn\u2019t a \u201cnext\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: Regarding the three pieces for the May exhibition\u2014the Mocco plate is beautiful, and the rice bowls are nice too.<br>\r\nWhat does \u201cmaking vessels for yourself\u201d mean to you?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Making for myself is basically the same as my usual work.<br>\r\nI always make what I want to make. I continue to create what I admire.<br>\r\nMaking for myself is just the usual. If anything, it\u2019s something more faithful to my style.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: It\u2019s even more in the Mizuno style.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Above all, it\u2019s what I want to make, what I think is good.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">\r\nHanada: You\u2019ve made refined, elegant vessels that are truly Mizuno.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Katsutoshi Mizuno:<\/strong> Thank you.<br>\r\nBut when I only work with white porcelain, sometimes I feel drawn to red painting or blue-and-white pieces.
