Over the course of two chapters, we are delighted to share our extensive conversations with the artist about tableware, cuisine, daily life, and the future. We hope you enjoy the read.\r\n  <\/p>\r\n  <\/center>\r\n\r\n  <p class=\"title\">\r\n  Visiting the Studio: Kazu Oba<br>\r\n  Chapter 1: Reconnecting with Kazu and Reaching the Starting Line of the Exhibition\r\n  <\/p>\r\n\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20150617-kazu02.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n  <p class=\"setsumei\">\r\n  In April, I visited Kazu Oba in Boulder, Colorado, to hold a planning meeting for his solo exhibition starting the following week.<br>\r\n  Boulder is well-known as a high-altitude training site for athletes, with the city itself sitting at an elevation of over 1,500 meters. Kazu welcomed me with a bright smile at Denver International Airport around lunchtime. &#8220;First things first, let&#8217;s grab some lunch. Let&#8217;s go get sushi. Denver actually has some delicious sushi, you know.&#8221; Starting our meeting right away with a conversation about food is classic Kazu, and it immediately lifted my spirits.<br>\r\n  Kazu&#8217;s studio had a clean, orderly feel\u2014a distinctly different atmosphere from typical pottery workshops in Japan\u2014offering a glimpse into the background of his creative work. His artistic endeavors extend beyond ceramics; the studio was filled with various creations, including sculptures.\r\n  <\/p>\r\n  <br>\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20150617-kazu03.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n  <p class=\"setsumei\">\r\n  On my end, I had a specific direction I wanted to explore for this solo exhibition, along with a list of items I hoped he would create. Some pieces were already defined down to their exact dimensions and shapes, others had only their functions decided, and some were just conceptual ideas of an overall atmosphere. Kazu had clearly been giving it a lot of thought as well, and our exchange of ideas felt endless. Throughout my stay\u2014whether we were eating, traveling, or taking a walk\u2014we found ourselves constantly discussing tableware and cuisine.\r\n  <\/p>\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20150617-kazu04.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n  <p class=\"setsumei\">\r\n  Whenever I threw out a suggestion, it served as a foundation to expand the conversation. For instance, when I mentioned, &#8220;A flat piece about this long and wide would be great. I think an unglazed, high-fired finish (yakishime) would work beautifully,&#8221; he would respond with ideas like, &#8220;Don&#8217;t you think it might be better with a bit of depth? Well, let&#8217;s give it a try first.&#8221;<br>\r\n  Giving it a try first\u2014this is the core &#8220;Kazu stance.&#8221; For us, while the finished pieces are certainly essential, the collaborative process of creating them together is just as meaningful.\r\n  <\/p>\r\n\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20150617-kazu05.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n  <p class=\"setsumei\">\r\n  The tableware Kazu creates is broad-minded, powerful, and carries a unique presence that goes beyond mere technical skill. Even when displayed alongside many other pieces at Hanada, his work immediately catches the eye.<br>\r\n  We have also received wonderful feedback from our customers, such as:<br>\r\n  &#8220;His work feels so beautifully open and generous.&#8221;<br>\r\n  &#8220;There is a unique aura to his pieces.&#8221;<br>\r\n  &#8220;This kind of texture is surprisingly hard to find elsewhere.&#8221;<br>\r\n  &#8220;Once I tried using it at home, it turned out to be even more practical than I expected!&#8221;\r\n  <\/p>\r\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/20150617-kazu06.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><br>\r\n\r\n  <p class=\"setsumei\">\r\n  The dynamism felt throughout his work vividly reflects his own way of living and lifestyle.
