So I thought a job I could mostly complete on my own might suit me better. <br>\r\nAt the very least, I knew being an office worker wasn\u2019t for me. (laughs) I decided I wanted to acquire a skill and make my living that way. I grew up in Tokoname, so ceramics naturally came to mind. My uncle worked in ceramics in Seto, so it was familiar to me. <br> \r\nWhen I was fifteen, during high school career counseling, I declared, \u201cI\u2019m going to the ceramics program!\u201d \u2014 and that\u2019s how I entered this world.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: There are many kinds of craftsmanship, even within ceramics. Why tableware?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> At first, I wanted to make sculptural objects. \r\nBut my mentor, Mitsuo Fujitsuka, placed great importance on \u201ceating,\u201d and through him I realized how essential everyday tableware really is.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: If you were aiming to make objects, it doesn\u2019t sound like you would naturally end up studying under Mr. Fujitsuka. (laughs)\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> That\u2019s true. At the time, more than anything, I wanted to leave home as soon as possible\u2026 (laughs). I happened to see a job opening to work under Mr. Fujitsuka. He was based in Kyoto, so I thought, \u201cI can live on my own!\u201d <br>\r\nI figured I could convince my parents, and so I applied and went through the interview process.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: I\u2019m curious \u2014 what kind of questions does Mr. Fujitsuka ask in an interview?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I was so nervous that I honestly don\u2019t remember anything\u2026\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Mr. Fujitsuka is known for taking great care of his apprentices and juniors.  \r\nYou can really sense that when you meet people who trained with him.<br>  \r\nOf course, he teaches them how to make ceramics, but beyond that, it feels like he prepares them to live as ceramic artists \u2014 or as makers of tableware.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> He even helped me find a place to live\u2026  \r\nI learned so many things from him. Above all, I learned firsthand about the joy of eating, about good food, and about a joyful table.<br>  \r\n\u201cEating is the foundation of living\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s such an obvious thing, but also easy to forget.  \r\nThose were truly fulfilling years, learning that lesson through experience.  \r\nAnd whenever my teacher talked about delicious food, he always looked so genuinely happy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: What kind of apprentice were you, Ms. Inamura?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Honestly, if I had an apprentice like myself, I\u2019d be at a loss. I was quiet, hard to read, and didn\u2019t show what I was thinking.<br>  \r\nI\u2019m amazed he was so patient with me. I made plenty of mistakes and caused trouble \u2014 and I was late sometimes, too\u2026.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That would earn a scolding. (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> He taught me very carefully about making as well. In particular, he often told me, \u201cKeep throwing, over and over.\u201d That\u2019s something I still keep in mind today.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Early Imari ware is an important theme in Mr. Fujitsuka\u2019s work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I love early Imari. There\u2019s a sense of ease to it, and a kind of raw strength before things became overly refined.<br>\r\nThe painting isn\u2019t about technical skill so much as the momentum and energy the maker possessed \u2014 it\u2019s very distinctive.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/themes\/hanada\/img\/interview\/inamura_03.jpg\" alt=\"\u7a32\u6751\u771f\u8036\">\r\n\r\n<h3>\u201cSomething I absolutely love, and want to keep forever\u2026\u201d<\/h3>\r\n<br>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Is there anything you particularly value when making tableware?\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> For me, ceramics are not art in the fine-art sense. I want to make pieces that are easy to use, that play a supporting role at the table, and that quietly enrich everyday life.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That\u2019s not an easy goal, but it really comes through in your work.  \r\nAnd your painting, in particular, is very appealing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I try to value whether I myself am enjoying the act of painting.<br>  \r\nThat said, while it\u2019s good to have fun, I need to be careful not to go too far \u2014  I tend to get carried away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs) It\u2019s been two or three years since I first met you.  \r\nCompared to back then, the range of what you make has expanded quite a bit in the last year or two.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Yes. I\u2019m particularly fond of my pieces with deep cobalt-blue glaze. I wanted pieces like that for myself, so I\u2019m honestly happy they turned out well.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Not just in variety, but the overall atmosphere of your work has broadened too. It feels more open, more free.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I think I\u2019ve become more relaxed. Before, I was holding myself back in certain ways.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Holding yourself back?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I was too concerned about not resembling my mentor.  \r\nI avoided motifs he used, worried about looking like I was imitating him.<br>  \r\nBut when you focus too much on that, you end up becoming similar anyway \u2014 it\u2019s strange. (laughs) At some point, I stopped worrying about it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Another artist said something similar just the other day.  \r\nThe influence of your mentor never truly disappears, which is why the first teacher is so important.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s not something you can simply remove. Rather than confronting it head-on, it\u2019s better to think about how to live with it, how to absorb it and make it your own \u2014 that\u2019s how you move forward.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Yes, I came to realize that.\u3000After that, I felt much freer, and ideas began to flow naturally from within.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/themes\/hanada\/img\/interview\/inamura_04.jpg\" alt=\"\u7a32\u6751\u771f\u8036\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Do you have an ideal piece \u2014 a dream vision of what you want to make?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I don\u2019t have a concrete image, but it would be a piece that I absolutely love, and want to keep forever.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: \u201cAbsolutely\u201d and \u201cforever\u201d\u2026 Those elongated words really convey the feeling of your ideal. It\u2019s a high standard.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I always feel I can do better. I constantly think, \u201cI should have done this,\u201d or \u201cThat might have been better.\u201d\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Being able to think that way is one of your strengths, and it shows how full your creative drive is right now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Thank you. I\u2019m having so much fun at the moment.  \r\nIdeas keep coming \u2014 maybe this motif would work, maybe that form\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: It really feels like ideas are always bubbling up. Every time I visit and see your new work, I think, \u201cShe\u2019s moved forward again.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> It might stay this way for a while. Perhaps it\u2019s better not to see an end. There are always parts I can grasp and parts I can\u2019t yet see \u2014  and I think that itself becomes motivation.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/themes\/hanada\/img\/interview\/inamura_05.jpg\" alt=\"\u7a32\u6751\u771f\u8036\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Watching how you work, you seem quite bold. Do you ever struggle or worry?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Going back to what I said earlier, I do worry about relationships with people. But when it comes to working alone, I rarely have doubts.  \r\nWorking alone gives me freedom. I suppose I\u2019m suited to working independently.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Too much freedom can sometimes be a problem, but that doesn\u2019t seem to be a concern in your case. For this exhibition, we looked at many older works as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Having real pieces close at hand while making things is incredibly educational. There are so many things you can\u2019t understand from museums or\u3000photographs alone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: In the process of making, you notice many things and feel moments of wonder \u2014 and in those moments, it\u2019s always the actual object that responds.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Yes, I struggled quite a bit this time as well\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: The Mokko-shaped plates were fascinating. They turned out exactly as I had hoped you would interpret them.<br>  \r\nWhen you first showed me the samples, I was honestly thrilled \u2014 it just clicked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I\u2019m glad to hear that. I feel a distinctly Japanese atmosphere in those plates. That may be why they were easy for me to absorb and work with.\r\n<br> \r\nThey can be used in a Western-style setting, but I think they\u2019d also suit traditional sweets. I tried many different ideas for the painting, including the motif.<br>\r\n  \r\nIn the end, that deer appeared quite suddenly \u2014 and once it was finished, it felt just right. \r\nPersonally, it\u2019s one of my favorite new pieces in this exhibition.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: Not overworking the surface was a good choice too. The sense of space is just right, and it really brings out the beauty of the form.<br> \r\nThe octagonal bowls are also striking \u2014 those were inspired by Belgian pieces, weren\u2019t they?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I was very careful when creating the molds. I wanted them to be clean and precise, but not rigid. Clean, yet soft octagons.<br>   \r\nI went through a lot of trial and error aiming for that balance, so I\u2019m relieved it worked out.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: That seems fundamental to how you think about clay bodies. Your work is made carefully and precisely, yet it never feels stiff.<br> \r\nIn any case, it\u2019s a very rich group of new works \u2014 from classical to pop, with hints of new directions as well. Choosing pieces for this exhibition was difficult \u2014 in fact, we ended up taking almost everything.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> Yes. This is my final exhibition before taking a break, so I put my heart into it and worked as hard as I could.<br> \r\nI\u2019m also looking forward to exhibiting alongside Haruya Abe\u2019s crisp, refined pieces. I hope visitors will enjoy the show. Thank you very much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: I\u2019m very much looking forward to sharing it with everyone.\u3000Finally, do you have any thoughts about what lies ahead?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maya Inamura:<\/strong> I\u2019ll be taking maternity leave for a while, so during that time I\u2019d like to revisit catalogs and old books \u2014 materials I\u2019ve collected over the years.  Even things I\u2019ve seen before may reveal something new.<br>  \r\nI also know an illustrator who found her work became softer and more expressive after giving birth. If raising a child changes how I express myself, I think that could be exciting too.<br>  \r\nBalancing pottery and childcare won\u2019t be easy, but I want to continue making tableware for a long time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">\r\nHanada: We look forward to seeing that evolution as well.
