(laughs) <br>\r\nIt was really just about material properties\u2014too physical.<br>\r\nIn hindsight, I think I was looking for something more spiritual.  \r\nSince I\u2019d always had some interest in pottery, I decided to take a year off in my third year of university to attend a training program in Shigaraki for future ceramic successors.<br>\r\nWhen I touched clay again, the feeling from my childhood came back instantly\u2014it really surprised me.  \r\nThat year became a major turning point for me.  \r\nAfter graduating, I worked for two years at a pottery in Shigaraki.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You went to England to study ceramics after that, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> \r\nYes. I had admired British fashion and punk culture since I was a teenager  and had always dreamed of going there\u2014  but it wasn\u2019t because of British ceramics! (laughs) <br> \r\nAfter leaving the pottery, I started saving money to go to England. <br> \r\nI worked at an ice cream factory, a udon factory, and a yakitori restaurant\u2014  \r\nseveral part-time jobs at once. <br> \r\nIt took about a year and a half, and eventually I went to Maze Hill Pottery in Greenwich, London\u2014  \r\na place known for its view over the city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Did you already know your teacher, Lisa Hammond?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> No, I didn\u2019t. I got her email address through an acquaintance and contacted her directly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That took courage!<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I figured if I asked to be her apprentice right away, I\u2019d just be turned down,  \r\nso I tried to let her get to know me little by little.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: (laughs) That makes sense.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I actually went to England to meet her in person.  \r\nBut my English was terrible\u2014I could barely communicate.<br> \r\nBefore meeting, I would write down what I wanted to say and bring it with me.<br>  \r\nSo I could express myself, but I had no idea what Lisa was saying! (laughs)<br>  \r\nEven so, she accepted me, which I\u2019m still grateful for.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You must have noticed many differences between Japan and England.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> Yes, quite a few.  \r\nIn Japan, the relationship between teacher and apprentice is very hierarchical,  \r\nbut in England, it felt more equal.<br>\r\nIf you consulted your teacher, they would listen, and they were open to suggestions too.<br>  \r\nAlso, I realized that many overseas potters have deep respect for Japanese ceramics\u2014  \r\nmuch more than people in Japan might imagine.  Japanese potters should feel proud of that.<br>  \r\nEspecially those in the UK doing unglazed ware\u2014they\u2019re openly aiming for the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan! <br> \r\nIn that sense, they\u2019re more straightforward about it than we are.<br>  \r\nAnd the clay is different too.<br>  \r\nFor high-fire ware especially, Japan\u2019s clay is much better, I think.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160413-2_03.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Encountering Slipware:<br>\r\n\u201cThis is what I want to make!\u201d<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Slipware has recently attracted attention among younger generations.  \r\nLisa\u2019s work isn\u2019t slipware, though. How did you first encounter it?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I think it was after I returned to university from my year in Shigaraki.<br>  \r\nAs a science student, I often stayed overnight in the lab for experiments,  and there was a lot of waiting time. <br> \r\nOne day I came across a poster online for a slipware exhibition held at the Osaka Museum of Folk Art in 2003.<br>  \r\nIt was a shock\u2014I instantly felt, \u201cThis is what I want to make!\u201d <br> \r\nI went straight to the museum.  \r\nIt\u2019s hard to explain, but the pieces felt big in spirit\u2014generous and open.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You could say they have a sense of embrace.  \r\nAre there any particular slipware pieces you\u2019re especially fond of?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> The most iconic one would be  \r\nthe piece held by Muneyoshi Yanagi in that famous photo (at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: The contrast between the vertical and horizontal lines is wonderful.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160413-2_04.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> And this one here (pointing at a striped pattern in the photo).<br>  \r\nI love how it\u2019s slightly distorted.  \r\nIt looks like it was drawn from the right, starting neatly but gradually shifting off balance\u2014that\u2019s what makes it so appealing. <br> \r\nThe rounded inside feels nice too.  \r\nAnd I like this one as well (pointing at the triple-patterned piece).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That rhythmic pattern of three is distinctive.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> Yes, all three have a beautiful glaze tone\u2014soft and lustrous.  \r\nSince materials are different now, it\u2019s difficult to recreate old techniques exactly using today\u2019s Japanese clays.<br>  \r\nWe need to find new ways.<br>  \r\nWhat I want to achieve isn\u2019t just reproducing the surface look, but expressing the atmosphere and texture of those works.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Slipware itself has a strong character.  \r\nWithin that, how do you see your own originality?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I\u2019m not trying to imitate old works, and I\u2019m not a genius.  \r\nI\u2019d rather learn from the past and gradually build my own ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Is there any technical aspect you particularly value in your work?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> Three things: glaze tone, rhythm, and the softness of the clay.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/20160413-2_05.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>That quiet presence that seems to speak<br>\r\nwhen you live with it\u2014<br>\r\nthat\u2019s what I want to express.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What kind of slipware are you aiming for in the future?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I want to express the feeling of slipware without actually using slip decoration.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What do you mean?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I believe even unglazed ware can carry the same atmosphere as slipware.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What does that atmosphere mean to you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> I think slipware has a raw, almost sensual side\u2014  \r\ndifferent from the lightness of many contemporary pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Is that something you sense from old works?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> Yes, from old slipware pieces I have at home.<br>  \r\nAt first, I collected them as references,  but once I brought them home, they started to \u201cspeak.\u201d <br> \r\nYou can\u2019t feel that just by seeing them in a museum\u2014  it\u2019s something that emerges when you live with them for a while.<br>  \r\nThat\u2019s the feeling I want to express in my own work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Perhaps it\u2019s something found in objects that have been cherished and survived through time.  \r\nI think your balance between exploring the old and adapting to modern life is very healthy.  \r\nNow, for the upcoming exhibition in April, you\u2019ve made a variety of new pieces.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> Please take a look at some of the larger pieces, even though they may not be suitable for everyday use.<br>  \r\nSome were made purely out of creative impulse,  \r\nso they might not be very practical\u2014but I\u2019d like people to see them anyway.<br>  \r\nYou don\u2019t have to buy them, just come and take a look! (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Those are often the pieces that touch people most deeply.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Yoji Yamada:<\/strong> If that\u2019s the case, I\u2019m truly happy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Thank you, and we look forward to your exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<br><br>\r\n\r\n<a
