To be honest, I wasn\u2019t very interested at first.<br>\r\nMy father was the first-generation head of the kiln, and he was always busy, so I barely remember ever hearing him talk calmly about his work.<br>\r\nBut it\u2019s true that I grew up surrounded by those things.<br>\r\nAlso, our family home was near Shumpu Banri-so, and it was part of my playground.<br>\r\nBack then, R\u014dsanjin\u2019s works were just lying around where even children could touch them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So you grew up with those things around you.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> After graduating from high school, I came to Tokyo to study design.<br>\r\nIn my first year, I studied industrial design. But I hated the rush hour trains in Tokyo, so I often skipped school.<br>\r\nTo tell the truth, the real reason I came to Tokyo was because I wanted to play in a band\u2026<br>\r\nIn my second year, I studied crafts.<br>\r\nAfter that, I went to Seto, graduated from the ceramics school, and then worked for five years at a Seto kiln.<br>\r\nI was assigned to a department that made Oribe and Shino pieces by hand.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You must have learned many things there.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> \u2026(long silence).<br>\r\nSorry, but I hardly remember because we were drinking all the time (laughs).<br>\r\nSeto\u2026 you see, the people there are strangely passionate.<br>\r\nThey talk endlessly\u2014ceramics theory, material theory\u2014always heated discussions.<br>\r\nAnd once people start drinking, it turns into fistfights.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Did you get into fights as well? (laughs)<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> No, I was always the one stopping them.<br>\r\nSaying things like, \u201cI understand what you\u2019re saying.\u201d<br>\r\nThough honestly, I had no idea what they were talking about\u2014completely incoherent (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/int20160727_07.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>What Gets Chosen, What We Admire<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Your work has a world uniquely its own.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I left Kasama without any preparation and just went independent.<br>\r\nThe only confidence I had was in producing quickly. I used to throw about 1,000 teacups in eight hours.<br>\r\nBut\u2026 no matter how many you make, it means nothing if people don\u2019t choose them.<br>\r\nLooking around, everyone else was making each piece with great care.<br>\r\nSo I gradually began spending more time on each piece.<br>\r\nMy techniques are a mix of various methods I\u2019ve adapted in my own way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: And now you spend more time and effort than anyone, crafting each piece carefully.<br>\r\nYour carved work in particular is extremely precise, yet it also has warmth\u2014that\u2019s the appeal.<br>\r\nThe black-and-white Tokusa pattern is something you\u2019ve been making since the early days, right?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Originally, I started because I wanted to make a material resembling oniita, but I failed miserably (laughs).<br>\r\nBut even though the \u201cfake oniita\u201d failed, it felt like it might be usable somehow, so I kept refining it\u2014and that\u2019s how it was born. Then I thought, maybe I could use it to draw patterns.<br>\r\nBack in Seto, I spent a whole year drawing Tokusa patterns on donburi bowls, so I got to the point where I could draw them even lying down. When I tried drawing with this material, it fit perfectly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: So that\u2019s how your style developed.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Also, purely classical Japanese tableware felt hard to use in my own home.<br>\r\nArchitecture and cuisine have changed so much\u2014something just didn\u2019t feel right anymore.<br>\r\nAnd I realized that many of my friends\u2019 homes had similar kinds of dining spaces.<br>\r\nBut at the same time, there\u2019s also a part of me that admires Shino, Oribe, and Kizeto.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/int20160727_08.jpg\">\r\n<br>\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/int20160727_09.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Not Rushing, Not Forcing\u2014Forgetting Time<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: I understand that feeling. What is important to you when you work?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Not rushing. Not hurrying.<br>\r\nCarving in particular never goes well if you\u2019re in a hurry.<br>\r\nEspecially when making incense burners, I remove clocks from my sight.<br>\r\nI don\u2019t look at anything that reminds me of time, like calendars.<br>\r\nI think it\u2019s important to forget about efficiency.<br>\r\nWith that kind of intricate work, if you don\u2019t make that mental separation, you can\u2019t keep going.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: What is \u201ca good tableware\u201d to you?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s simply one that suits the table it\u2019s used on. It\u2019s not that simple things or ornate things are good *because* of that. Even if something could be called a \u201cgood tableware,\u201d it won\u2019t match everyone\u2019s life equally.<br>\r\nJapanese dining tables are wonderful because so many different things coexist. And the fact that they all come together as a whole\u2014that might be the answer.<br>\r\nIf one of those pieces happens to be mine, then that makes me happy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Homes and food vary so much nowadays.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> It\u2019s important to use different things depending on the occasion.<br>\r\nI mean, even if you love swim trunks, you wouldn\u2019t wear them to climb a mountain (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/int20160727_10.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>The Joy of Matching Tableware<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: That\u2019s a very \u201cMasubuchi-like\u201d way to wrap things up\u2014convincing and not convincing at the same time. Before our conversation drifts too far from tableware (laughs), please share a message for the upcoming exhibition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Since it\u2019s a two-person exhibition with Mr. Shimura, I hope people enjoy the combinations. The joy of pairing our pieces, even though at first glance they seem different.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: Last time, many visitors enjoyed choosing pieces from both of you together.<br>\r\nAny final words?<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Tokuhiro Masubuchi:<\/strong> Nothing comes to mind (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\">Hanada: You were honest till the very end.
