From the start, did you share a similar direction?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> I felt that our tastes were similar.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> There wasn\u2019t anything that was completely different. At first, we were hesitant about working together, but once we started, it went surprisingly smoothly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> At the beginning, she seemed a bit more resistant, maybe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Haha. But once we started, we shared meals together and naturally talked like, \u201cIt would be nice if we had this,\u201d and things progressed.<br>\r\nOf course, we had many failures along the way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> There were quite a few, yes (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_02.jpg\" alt=\"sub5710s1_02\" width=\"730\" height=\"518\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9192\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You trained in Arita and Kyoto. Did you notice any differences?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> The wheel rotation for trimming the foot is opposite, but now it\u2019s a mix of various styles\u2014basically a combination.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> You\u2019re flexible, Arata (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> If you say that nicely, yes, flexible. In reality, rather careless (laughs).<br>\r\nWe weren\u2019t born into potter families, so we don\u2019t feel many constraints. But the habits from where we first learned still linger.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> For better or worse, we have no \u201cmusts\u201d at all.<br>\r\nOur interests include music, ethnic clothing and textiles, architecture\u2026 many things inspire our work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Perhaps that\u2019s the great thing about your work\u2014it doesn\u2019t feel constricted\u2026 it\u2019s open.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I\u2019m glad you say that. Sometimes the pieces might be a bit awkward, maybe because we create without caring about existing rules.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> She is more sensitive about usability.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I do use them more often, after all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> I tend to pursue form more simply.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I don\u2019t want pieces that are just practical. I try to find the right balance. If something isn\u2019t usable, people won\u2019t pick it up\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> But if the form isn\u2019t good, it probably won\u2019t catch the eye either (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I also don\u2019t like something that\u2019s just stylish.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Something that\u2019s just stylish would seem uncool to you both?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Like ethnic clothing that isn\u2019t streamlined. I like a bit of earthiness or imperfection, not just inorganic coolness.<br>\r\nSomething that grows on you with use. Catchy things can get boring quickly.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s the same with music\u2014I like things that deepen over time.<br>\r\nAlso, things that are too cool don\u2019t reflect our way of life. We don\u2019t feel reality in something that\u2019s perfect in every way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_03.jpg\" alt=\"sub5710s1_03\" width=\"730\" height=\"515\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9193\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> We also don\u2019t simply imitate old items.<br>\r\nThe moment you try to, you get the \u201ccorrect answer.\u201d<br>\r\nAnd the more you chase that, the more it feels like you\u2019re moving away from it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> We want to capture the essence.<br>\r\nEven if we see old items, the clay is different, the glaze is different, the kilns are different, and we even have electricity\u2014so trying to make the same thing would be odd.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You like Joseon dynasty pieces too. Do you try to incorporate the atmosphere you feel from them?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> That kind of broad-minded feeling.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Or the feeling of an era, like Art Deco or Brancusi, or the mix of craft and product\u2026 I like many things\u2014undisciplined (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I\u2019m simply attracted to handwork as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you talk about your work together?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Yes, we do.<br>\r\nSometimes, after spending a long time making something, she\u2019ll say, \u201cThe size is off,\u201d and it\u2019s instant critique\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Or the storage is bad\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Yes, but when you are told to limit it to this size, it can actually make it hard to create freely\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> On the other hand, if the maker is told, \u201cPlease put this here,\u201d it can feel constricting for the one serving too.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_04.jpg\" alt=\"sub5710s1_04\" width=\"730\" height=\"511\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_04.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_04-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs) That must be tough. Do the \u201cinstant critiques\u201d happen often?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Quite often.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> (laughs) I feel like I\u2019m being really mean. \r\nBut these things come from very beautiful plaster molds. Arata loves polishing and carving, after all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> I\u2019m aware that sometimes the mold itself becomes a work (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> But a plaster mold is solid, whereas tableware is hollow.<br>\r\nNo matter how beautifully the mold is made, that density doesn\u2019t always translate to the ware. Sometimes the mold was just too perfect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Like stone\u2014when you polish it, the form becomes more defined. Strength emerges, in a sense. But sometimes you exhaust yourself on the mold (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_05.jpg\" alt=\"sub5710s1_05\" width=\"730\" height=\"499\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9195\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Has the precision of your new works improved?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Lately, I often make things based on her ideas, so I\u2019m not making things blindly.<br>\r\nFor example, when making a bowl: \u201cIt should hold soup and simmered dishes, but not too much that it looks clumsy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Very specific.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Sometimes it\u2019s abstract too. She\u2019ll say, \u201cMake it feel soft.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> We also spent a lot of time discussing the edge finish of this namasu plate.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> While arranging the traditional design, it eventually ended up close to the original.<br>\r\nAt first, it was more linear, but it was too flat, so we softened it again\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I had wanted him to make namasu plates for a long time and kept asking.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Don\u2019t you ever make them yourself?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Namasu plates need a mold, so I need him to make it first (mold making is Arata\u2019s responsibility).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you have a lot of requests.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> It\u2019s easy for the one making requests (laughs) Also, even if ideas are contradictory, in the mind it doesn\u2019t feel contradictory. It\u2019s like adding \u201cgood\u201d to \u201cgood\u201d to make it even better. Trying to combine two incompatible \u201cgoods\u201d\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> For the one actually doing it, following those instructions can make form-making challenging, revealing contradictions.<br>\r\nThen she\u2019ll say, \u201cThat\u2019s not quite right\u2026\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Mold work has many steps and you can\u2019t go back. Once you\u2019ve gone this far, it\u2019s tough.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> When someone critiques a finished piece, I now pause and look at it again the next day. Distance helps you approach it with a fresh mindset.<br>\r\nIf criticized right after completion, it\u2019s too much to digest (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> We used to argue a lot over that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> \u201cWell, that\u2019s weird,\u201d you think.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> I\u2019d say, \u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Then I say, \u201cDo you know how many hours that took?\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> And I want to say, \u201cIt\u2019s not about the time\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You get along well. Such dialogue requires trust.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Recently we\u2019ve calmed down. Usually, the parts criticized are the ones that already bother you.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Yes, and internally we probably justify ourselves: \u201cThis is fine as it is.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/sub5710s1_06.jpg\" alt=\"sub5710s1_06\" width=\"730\" height=\"522\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9196\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you also give input from Arata to Atsuko?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> Sometimes I give ideas for decoration, like the dandelion motif here.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> The carved motif series references old Chinese items.<br>\r\nNot too Chinese-looking, and with a touch of Western atmosphere\u2014it\u2019s nice.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Molds and carved pieces have different atmospheres.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Carved pieces have beautiful glaze pooling, so darker ash glazes suit them.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> For relief, lighter or white glazes look better.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you exchange opinions with each other.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Arata Anzai: <\/strong> I think I get told more than I tell, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"answertext\"><strong>Atsuko Anzai: <\/strong> Really? Initially butterfly-shaped bowls, rimmed plates, simple cups\u2026 It\u2019s been almost ten years.<br>\r\nI still remember seeing the butterfly bowl for the first time.
