What was your path like?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I studied oil painting at university, but I never felt that painting was something I would pursue professionally.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Did you have any exposure to ceramics while you were at university?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Students in the oil painting department don\u2019t normally do ceramics. However, if you were earning a teaching license, you had to choose a craft subject. At that time, I chose metalwork rather than ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So you were getting a teaching license (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> You\u2019re both laughing now\u2026 Everyone gets a teaching license, don\u2019t they?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Sorry about that. You do seem like you\u2019d make a good teacher, Ms. Miyaoka.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Oh no, not at all. I quickly realized it wasn\u2019t for me.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And then you graduated.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> After graduating, I stayed in Turkey for about five months.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Were you studying something there?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Studying\u2026 well\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215-1_02.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> You were playing an instrument at that time, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Yes, the saz, a Turkish plucked string instrument.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And while playing music, you encountered ceramics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I had always been interested in ceramics, and I also visited K\u00fctahya, a well-known ceramic-producing region in Turkey.<br>\r\nWhile looking at K\u00fctahya ceramics, I briefly thought that studying ceramics in Turkey might be interesting. But then I reconsidered and thought, \u201cIf I\u2019m going to do ceramics, it should be in Japan,\u201d and decided to attend a training school in Seto.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Those five months in Turkey must have given you a valuable opportunity to look at Japanese things from the outside.<br>\r\nAfter that, the two of you met in Seto.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Yes. In addition to school, there were shared rental kilns in Seto. We often pooled together with friends, rented a kiln, and fired a whole load together.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> We were experimenting and making all sorts of things.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I\u2019m starting to remember now (laughs). We made so many strange things, didn\u2019t we? (laughs)<br>\r\nDidn\u2019t we also try zinc crystalline glazes?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Well, it was all part of experimenting.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: After finishing pottery school, Mr. Shimura, you apprenticed under Mr. Nagai (Sokichi), right?<br>\r\nWhat about you, Ms. Miyaoka?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Shimura decided to stay in Seto, so I took a job at a ceramics factory there.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: In a way, those are quite contrasting career paths.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Around that time, we also frequently went together to antique shops in Nagoya.<br>\r\nBy seeing so many things, I think we gradually came to understand the contours of what we truly liked.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Were your tastes similar?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I think the things we both felt were \u201cgood\u201d were quite close.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is there a particularly memorable piece?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Seeing an ko-sometsuke muk\u014dzuke made me realize how free and interesting blue-and-white ware could be.<br>\r\nUntil then, I had thought sometsuke meant something precise and refined, but as I looked at antiques, I became drawn to the freedom of sometsuke and the generous quality of everyday wares.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Yes, this one\u2014this one. The muk\u014dzuke with the motif.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> That was early on, when we bought that.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: So it began with ko-sometsuke.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Yes. At first, we mainly modeled our work on ko-sometsuke.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Were you focusing on something else at the time, Mr. Shimura?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> At that time, we were working on sometsuke together.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> We started out together, but we lacked cooperation far too much\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Which of you lacked cooperation?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> It\u2019s not one or the other\u2014we both just want to do things our own way in the end (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> And as we kept trying different things, I came to like the soft feeling of early Imari.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215-1_03.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>The Beginning of Kagetsuyo<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Could you tell us the origin of the name Kagetsuyo?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> An antique dealer who has been very kind to us suggested it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> We were given several options, and among them, Kagetsuyo felt the simplest and most beautiful.<br>\r\nWhen we were driving back from Seto to Tokyo, we saw a ramen shop called \u201cKagetsu,\u201d and I remember thinking, \u201cOh\u2026 ramen shop\u2026\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: That must have been momentarily confusing (laughs). Did you find a workspace in Tokyo easily?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> We were mainly looking for a property with enough space to install a kiln.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> We chose this house simply because we could put a kiln here (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> We didn\u2019t really look at the living space at all.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> After we moved in, we said to each other, \u201cSo this is what the house is like.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs) Still, it turned out to be a lovely home and suits you both.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> It suits us. Living deep in nature would probably be a bit too much for us.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> This somewhat in-between location is just right for us.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Close to Tokyo, yet surrounded by a fair amount of nature.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> There was a time when I admired the idea of living deep in the mountains.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Like thinking that if you make pottery, you have to live in an old farmhouse in nature.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: The best place is wherever you feel most comfortable. And so, Kagetsuyo\u2019s work began here in Tokyo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> At first, we were constantly renovating the house. I was doing carpentry all the time\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> A neighbor once asked me, \u201cIs that carpenter your husband?\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> That did happen.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215-1_04.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Ceramics Making That Was Simply There Before We Knew It<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: What do each of you find enjoyable about making ceramics?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> I enjoy the moment when I first remove a piece from the mold. It\u2019s like, \u201cOh, there it is!\u201d (laughs).<br>\r\nAs for painting, I\u2019ve only recently started to enjoy it.<br>\r\nOr rather, I\u2019ve finally reached a point where I feel satisfied with my own work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> For me, it\u2019s opening the kiln.<br>\r\nWhen a firing goes well, that\u2019s a really happy moment.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Opening the kiln is fun.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you open the kiln together?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> No. Whoever has time does it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs) When I previously asked you, Mr. Shimura, about a particularly memorable piece of your own work, you talked about a certain sake flask.<br>\r\nIt\u2019s already in someone else\u2019s hands, you don\u2019t even know where it is anymore, but you still think about it from time to time. Ms. Miyaoka, do you have something like that?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Perhaps a tiered jubako box I made a few years ago. It was something I felt genuinely confident about.<br>\r\nIt was a three-tiered box with plum blossoms and bush warblers reserved in white against a deep blue glaze, and painted in underglaze blue. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019ve made jubako many times\u2014did this one feel especially successful?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> The construction was quite precise, and the design was something I was truly satisfied with.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> All the paintings connect across the three tiers, right? \r\nI wanted it for our New Year\u2019s table (laughs). We still talk about that jubako from time to time.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Yes, we do.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215-1_05.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>A Natural Approach to Ceramics by Two Happy People<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Do you ever discuss each other\u2019s work?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> After something is finished, we might say, \u201cThat\u2019s nice.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Basically, we only say positive things to each other (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Because we don\u2019t want to argue (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Sometimes I do say things like, \u201cHmm, this one\u2019s not quite right\u201d (laughs). But usually, I already know it myself when that happens. I end up telling myself, \u201cWell, it can\u2019t be helped that it turned out this way.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You don\u2019t sit side by side at the wheel, do you?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> We\u2019re positioned at right angles, so we don\u2019t have to face each other.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: (laughs) Is there something important that you both keep in mind when working?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> What we share is the idea of valuing a \u201cnatural feeling.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Not just in terms of materials, but also not leaning too heavily into technique\u2026<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Like adding strange little flourishes\u2026 we avoid anything that feels contrived (laughs).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> We don\u2019t do preliminary sketches.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Somehow, it feels like things turn out better that way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: You\u2019re the same, Mr. Shimura\u2014eliminating artificiality.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> With Joseon ceramics, it would be wonderful if we could make them softly, but it\u2019s not easy.<br>\r\nI like that relaxed, unforced feeling, but it doesn\u2019t come naturally.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It\u2019s difficult, isn\u2019t it?<br>\r\nEven when we say \u201cnatural,\u201d everyone perceives and expresses it differently.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> It\u2019s like a sense of healthiness, or cleanliness\u2026 softness, or generosity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: And that\u2019s what you sense in the Joseon and early Imari pieces you admire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Later Imari becomes much more rigid and formal. Nabeshima, for example.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Though there are Nabeshima pieces I like as well.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: As they are, they might be difficult to use on today\u2019s dining table, but with arrangement and color choices, I think there\u2019s plenty of potential.<br>\r\nThose bold compositions and ideas are incredibly inspiring.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> As they are, they feel a bit too perfect.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Also, when I look at your work, more than anything, I feel the atmosphere of your happy everyday life. It gives the impression that \u201ckind people must be making these.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.utsuwa-hanada.jp\/hanada\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/20170215-1_06.jpg\">\r\n\r\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: I think the six-sun celadon bowl with relief decoration is one piece that symbolizes your work, Mr. Shimura. Are there any other pieces you feel particularly attached to?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Perhaps the small plate with a chrysanthemum motif that I made early on. I\u2019ve been making it continuously ever since.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: It comes in five different painted designs, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> It started with three designs and later became five.<br>\r\nI\u2019ve kept making it for a long time, and it\u2019s a piece I truly love.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Is there anything you\u2019re hoping to pursue in the future? When I spoke with Mr. Shimura recently, he mentioned starting to use cute motifs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Something new\u2026 hmm\u2026 chopstick rests.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> Your new challenge is chopstick rests\u2026?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p class=\"browntext\" style=\"margin-top:0px\">Hanada: Chopstick rests are a perfectly valid challenge! (laughs)<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Maiko Miyaoka:<\/strong> As for me, I want to keep refining and improving what I\u2019m already doing.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Mutsuhiko Shimura:<\/strong> Lately, it feels like you\u2019ve been making a lot of things in deep blue glaze.
